I just paid $245 total for 3 days of braiding my DDs horse at the Oaks last weekend here in So Cal. One day was only the mane and two days were mane and tail.

I am in the Northeast and charge $45 for a mane and $35 for a tail. I was talking with a couple of other braiders at the Northeast Benefit and they are charging $50 for mane and still $35 for tail.

There's no difference in pay grade for A-B-C(? if desired?) braids.

Good braiders work as if every show were a AA. They'll braid for you, and it's your decision where you want to show. And if you want a good one, you pay for what they charge. In my area it can be as much as $55 mane/$35 tail with add-ons for fake tail attachment. I personally have braided enough ill-behaved horses in the wee hours that I would love to charge hazard pay on top of that! ;) Mediocre v. ninja braids make a difference. Don't judge on price. Find a horse on your local circuit that you think looks great/like you want to look and ask who braided it. Then hire that person. :)
