My husband and I just took my gelding Clumpy to the emergency clinic. I can't believe this is even happening; I just lost my beloved Mischief on Christmas eve and I don't think I can go through this again. Please - Keep my brave fellah in your high octane prayers and jingles for a wee while today.
At this point, every bit helps; I've seen it work for others.
Sudden gas colic yesterday eve, vet out, was better overnite and deteriorated by noon. Ultrasound at the clinic showed atonic and thickening of a section of small intestine but bloods not bad, temp fine, but lots of gas and sparse very wet manure. They're trying to treat with meds overnite but am waiting to hear the phone. That's all I know but will update when I get the call for odds on surgery or?? I can't stop dry heaving. I love him so much.

Jingles from Florida, from the owner of a horse that had colic surgery last October for an impaction of his small intestine, due to ileal hypertrophy (thickening of the intestinal walls where it empties into the cecum).

He is doing great now since the surgery and change of diet.

Hope your guy gets well soon and does not need surgery.

The surgeon called and said he's getting a team together. He's not doing well and they're opening him up. I'm trying to stay positive, I want to be there with him but the TB that we took on for Clumpy when Mischief went to heaven is calling for Clumpy and I have to wait by the phone to hear what they can or can't do.
I cradled that Clumpy and steamed his lungs and jabbed him with ethacillin when I took him home from a bad situation when he was 3 months old. We weren't sure he would live but life is forgiving and he rallied, got big and strong and never looked back. he will be 13 the end of this month and is my clyde/morgan rock. He looked so spent when I left the clinic.
I could say "you don't know how much" your empathy and well wishes mean but I know damn well you do and I am grateful to the very bottom of my heart. I want so badly to trade places with him right now.

what seemed like an eternity ago the surgeon called and prepared us for the worst case senario as his large colon was twisted and was in danger of rupture and that would be it. It's now 10:43 pm and no call. I've stopped gagging. Is it possible that this first hurdle has been crossed? "Jingle" is Such a beeeeautiful word. Just the beginning of what will be tough going to survive this, but maybe the first hurdle is behind him. I've even triple checked to make sure the ringer on this old phone hasn't been bumped off. Waiting.

The call finally came around midnight; Clumpy passed away in his recovery stall.
That the surgeon and his team managed to get him through the surgery with the complications they found is a credit to their skill and an obvious love for what they do. It just wasn't meant to be.
I can't focus right now to finish a thought long enough to type it out; lots of other souls around here need my care so it's good that way. But thank you, thank you for putting yourselves in our shoes; empathy is hard emotion to deal with. For me anyway. There's nothing worse than seeing another's pain and being helpless to change it. I sincerely appreciate you going there for me.
He's where we will all be eventually, where there's no wanting, no need, no pain, no loneliness, he's with my Mischief again - everyone's precious souls -just peace.

I am so very sorry for your loss...especially so soon after your previous loss.

I lost my beloved "horse of a lifetime" a couple of months ago, and the following poem touched my heart--I hope it gives you just a tiny bit of comfort:

Somewhere in time's own space
There must be some sweet pastured place
Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow
Some paradise where horses go,
For by the love that guides my pen
I know great horses live again.

(author: Stanley Harrison)

I hope that your Clumpy and my Zorro are grazing side by side together!

I' m on my third attempt to do a load of laundry. It's helpful to put the items in after the machine is filled and before the cycles finish. Oh, and ALL of the items , not just half of them. AND close the damn lid.
I went to the clinic yesterday to pick up his halter and lead rope. There was also an exam glove with his forelock, mane and tail hair and one of his chestnuts in it; the hair all carefully separated and braided and I opened it this morning, stuck my nose in and took a big deep pull of his memories and a hint of surgical scrub.

Thoughts and prayers with you and your family today -- so glad to hear the clinic staff members were kind and thoughtful - very nice gesture with the forelock, chestnut and tail hair. I have been there - walking in with horse, halter and lead and later in the dark leaving with just his halter, lead and hair. In tears - writing this - take care and know that you gave him your best! And he knew that. Again, I am so sorry for your loss. RIP CLUMPY.

A Parting Prayer

Dear Lord, please open your gates
and call St. Francis
to come escort this beloved companion
across the Rainbow Bridge.

Assign her to a place of honor,
for she has been a faithful servant
and has always done her best to please me.

Bless the hands that send her to you,
for they are doing so in love and compassion,
freeing her from pain and suffering.

Grant me the strength not to dwell on my loss.
Help me remember the details of her life
with the love she has shown me.
And grant me the courage to honor her
by sharing those memories with others.

Let her remember me as well
and let her know that I will always love her.
And when it's my time to pass over into your paradise,
please allow her to accompany those
who will bring me home.

Thank you, Lord,
for the gift of her companionship
and for the time we've had together.

And thank you, Lord,
for granting me the strength
to give her to you now.

Amen.
