Long-time lurker here with a question. I have a four-year-old who is expressing some interest in learning to ride. I've been out of the horse world for a long time (former dressage/combined training enthusiast) and I'd like to find him a great instructor on the east side of Portland. We're not looking for a high-pressure show barn experience...just a really good instructor who will make the experience fun while teaching solid fundamentals.
Any recommendations?

Bump!
Because I am looking for the same thing to refer a family friend to.
To OP- Rain Creek is a well-known h/j show barn, but one of Vicki's former students is branching off and doing a more kid-oriented lesson program. Google Quiet Rein Riding school.
There's also Big Dog Stables that specialized in ponies.
But to me, both of those are pretty show-oriented.
