View Full Version : Yumm - Dorito's! Anyone?

While I was playing around at the barn the other day, I pulled out a bag of Dorito's after I gave my horse his carrots. He was giving me his "please, Mom...can I have s'more?" look so I gave him one. He went WILD. He pulled at the bag, shoved his face in it, bugged and bugged and bugged for more Dorito's! He was in love.
So...anyone else? Have any of those not-so-normal treats that your horses just LOVE?! :D

Southern Buttermilk Biscuit...with a hint of bacon grease in it. Seriously. Was standing near my Percheron mare one early Saturday morning, enjoying my Bacon Biscuit when I, too, got That Look. Gave her a corner of the biscuit and that was it.
Weird mare.

My old horse used to love whole wheat donuts from a local bakery and Drakes Cakes - those kind of mini coffee cakes with cinnamon crumble on top. He also loved Countrytime lemonade. Had his own yellow plastic 'glass' he drank out of (he'd grab the edge of the cup and tip it up to get the last bits out). At one session at the handicapped riders club, he wouldn't leave this poor woman alone once he saw she had a countrytime yellow purse.
We boarded with a lady who had a gorgeous brown & white paint who would steal the hotdog right off the bun at shows. Many's the kid who came near her at lunchtime who ended up with a dogless bun in hand.

Mack's pretty skeptical about anything except regular made-for-horses treats, and carrots and apples. Booorrriiinnnnnggggg!!!

Ketchup.... we were at a horse show and someone had a paper tray with french fries in it. And ketchup squirted in the bottom. He was begging, they gave him a french fry but he spit that out. So once they were finished, they jokingly offered the empty tray with the left over ketchup. He slurped it up and begged for more. Silly boy.
He also likes apple cinnamon or strawberry breakfast bars, Gatorade, Sprite, Cool Ranch Doritos, BBQ chips and Fritos.
Yes, he's a food 'ho. But surprisingly enough... he doesn't like peeps.

My guy only likes horsey treats.
We have a horse at the barn that eats everything. He also licks you with the underside of his tongue.
My horse that I had as a kid LOVED soft serve ice cream, espcially the cones. He would look pathetic until he got the cone.

I used to ride with a girl whose horse loved anything.
PB sandwiches, fritos, cheetos, anything a teenager would bring for lunch @ the barn.
Popcycles are always a hit.
Watermelon rind.
Sweet tea.

I guess this makes sense, but my guy loves apple cinnamon Nutri-Grain bars. I haven't tried too many wacky treats, but I am curious to see what else he likes. Brought fig newtons the other day, but forgot to break them out.

My DD's pony coliced and nearly died -he ate a whole family size bag of cool ranch Dorito's! She had left him in his pen - he LOVES them! - Everything in moderation. 12 days in the hospital w/o surgery he was tight as rain - of course it cost me $2750 :eek:

ALRIGHTY then....I think we're gonna need to cut back on them Dorito's! I mean, he's not eating a family sized bag or anything...but that and the forbidden substance is enough to convince me.

My friends QHx LOOOOOVES McDonalds Chicken Breakfast Sandwichs. Her mom brought us each one when we were at an early morning horse show once, and while standing with her horse we were eating them. A piece dropped, so we picked it up and gave it to him and he was all over us for them! I didn't think they were very good to begin with, soo I just gave him the other half of mine:lol:

The horse I used to own would steal orange pop or dr. pepper if it was in front of him. LOVED it. My little sister's horse ate french fries. As she was giving him one he (quicker than anyone could stop him) reached over and took a bite out of her burger! Yuck.

Rhubarb! One day I looked out to see my TB with his head stuck through the fence reaching as far as he could for one of our rhubarb bushes, luckily he was smart enough to not eat the leaves... But he LOVES the stalks. He won't eat an apple but he'll eat rhubarb. weird pony *shakes head*

I have the exact opposite... my OTTB will eat NOTHING except horse cookies (any flavor) and peppermints. I can't get him to eat a carrot... won't touch fresh apples, or pears... turns his nose at Peeps... Offered him a Pecan Sandie cookie once, he chewed it up and promptly spit ALL of it out... Ix-nay on pizza crusts... I just can't get him to eat ANY kind of treat except horse cookies and peppermints. :( (I guess I should be happy about that, right?)
But yet he's never turned his nose at anything in his feed bin-- slurps up copious amounts of beet pulp and any and every supplement I've put in there. Just no treats!! WTF?!?!

One horse I groomed would do anything for strawberry twizzlers. Another horse I rode recently is an Apple Jacks addict. Mine will eat just about anything... once. She accidentally grabbed a raw egg, crunched down, and promptly spit it out with the "OMG, WTF was THAT!" look.

Taco Bell soft tacos. We were sitting in the barn aisle one afternoon having tacos when my horse pushes at my shoulder to see what I have. Assuming he would not eat it, I broke off a bite of the taco (meat & all). He chewed it up & wouldn't leave me alone after that. I had to move so that I could eat the rest of the taco. I think that was his most favorite thing I ever gave him - well, except that he was a "Flaxseed cookie Ho!" He could have 4 cookies in his mouth & still be begging for another one.

My friend used to bring his horse Egg McMuffins and hash browns before horse shows. He said it was a "bribe." This is also the horse that used to wash it down with a can of Coke. I've been known to share my Gatorade with horses in the barn, and also my granola bars.
My boy doesn't like anything other than fresh carrots, apple snacks, and fresh apples--NOT the yellow or green ones, just red. His favorites are these organic jazz apples I get from Trader Joe's. He will not leave me alone after I give him a slice of one of those! And yet, anything in his feedbowl he will eat, including meds.

I don't think a small amount of chocolate is going to do a 1200lb horse much harm. Just like one chocolage chip cookie isn't going to kill a dog. But I"m no vet...
However, we had a 15 y/o, 25lb lab/terrier mix get into a whole bag of dove chocolates one night while we were gone, called the ER vet who told us that while chocolate is hard for dogs to digest, it's not as bad as people hype it up to be. Dunno if that is true or if the vet was crazy, but the dog was just fine and had no ill side effects. With that being said, I've since asked several vets and all have different opinions. Some say that chocolate will make a dog deathly ill (if that's the case, my dogs shouldn't be here right now) and others say it's usually no big deal. Who knows...
Not that I'd suggest routinely feeding dogs (or horses) chocolate, but I don't think a small amount once in a great while is going to be much of a problem.

My dog ate an entire Easter basket one year. Other than being thirsty the next day, he worked it out. I have been slammed though about sharing my coffee with my horse, which I guess is a similar issue...:(

It's actually the darker chocolates, such as the kinds commonly used for baking and cake frosting, that do real damage. The lighter looking stuff not so much unless it's in extremely large quantities.

Our horses love watermelon and get some all thru the summer.
We had a horse that loved Dairy Queen soft vanilla ice cream.
One day he snitched some when we were not paying attention.
Ice cream cones have two sides, so we shared after that.:p
We got tired of him getting the biggest half and when we drove to a Dairy Queen, we got a cone just for him.
He knew it was coming and started slobbering.;)

I am NOT sharing my Doritos with my horse!:)
My sister did have a mare back in the 60s that loved roast beef sandwiches. And a friend had a mare that would guzzle Coke straight out of the glass bottle by grasping it between her front teeth and doing the ol' bottoms up (this became useful when she colicked one day, we rode to the 7-11 to fetch a bottle of Pepto Bismol, and she ingested that in her own efficient way).
Beer- yes, I had one horse that could only be caught if you had your hunting clothes on OR, just maybe, on a hot day, he heard that pop top and saw you were enjoying some suds.
I also had the BO confess to me last night that despite her strict rule that nobody should feed anybody else's horses ANYTHING- she does sometimes share her breakfast toast with my gelding. Geez, he's got EVERYBODY in love with him.

This reminds me that my current gelding really likes grapes & raisins, which i also believe are "bad for horses":D

Nope, grapes and raisins are fine for horses. It's dogs who can't have 'em.
Horses aren't supposed to have avocadoes, onions, potatoes, persimmons, anything in the nightshade family like peppers and tomatoes, broccoli, or cauliflower.
Oh, and red maple leaves. Those are poisonous to horses.

Mountain Dew-- all the sugar, twice the caffeine.
The big dumb animal with a brain the size of an orange is an information sponge. A dude offers this horse a sip of his Mountain Dew once. Four days later, I'm riding and the guy is along the fence when he pops the top on a fresh can. My horse was at his side in a shot.
You don't need to tell him twice.

What's with the potato thing, anyway? I used to give my horse when I was a kid chunks of (peeled) potato. Or at least, I remember doing so, it could be I made it up and now it just feels like a memory. But anyway! What's wrong with potatos?

Mine LOVES beer as well. But only the expensive kinds. . .Warsteiner. . .Killian's. . .Red Stripe. Figures.
He's actually turned up his nose when someone offered him a Bud Light. The "cheapest" he'll go is a Budweiser.
Other than that, he likes to "beg" for treats that he really isn't even interested in (fries, chips, etc). Of course, the barn dogs love him for it. . .because he'll take the "treat" from the person offering and immediately drop it for one of the dogs to get. . .

Archway Molasses cookies.
Both boys salivate at the sound of the cellophane wrapper being undone.
Lucky for me the $1 store variety has the same effect.
Raw sweet potatoes are another Fave.

We never thought he'd actually eat it.
It just seemed so wrong!

I have a very fuzzy recollection that somewhere in eastern Europe, where potatoes are plentiful, they are routinely fed to horses...but like I said, verrry fuzzy....

Sam loves orange soda, Mountain Dew and Brown Frosted Poptarts!
I have a friend who owns an Arab named Elixir who will eat about anything-Ritz crackers, Saltines, Chips Ahoy, fruit snacks, and on the occasion bologna sandwiches. He is a freak about Pepsi. Went with her to a lesson and as we were leading back-passed the Pepsi machine and he planted all fours. Would not move until we bought him one!
Our 5-6 hour trail rides were a hoot because everytime E heard the saddlebag open he would stop and be like What's for lunch?

My mare will only actually eat apples and carrots. She can't quite figure out how to eat mints, she tries to bite them with her front teeth and then sucks on them for a bit before they fall out of her mouth. She is very good at doing the PLEEEAAAASSSSEEEE face with her head tilted sideways and her lips reaching and reaching. She will also scuffle your hair as a begging method. There is a gelding in the barn who LOVES black jelly beans, which is really convenient 'cause none of us like them!

I learned about Peeps here on COTH and my mare is now addicted. I bought over 100 packages after Easter ($.12 per--gotta love those preservatives as they are still soft), and she goes through a 5-pack a night. I just crinkle the plastic and she's all ears and contorted nose.
She'll also finish off my peanut butter sandwiches, and recently decided Fritos were yummy.
