Do you find most medium ponies (with an average head - not super petite nor particularly large) wear a 4 1/2" bit or a 5" bit?

Mine uses a 4 3/4", but your best bet would be to measure.

5" is typically a horse size. My larges ponies usually go in 4 3/4" bits.

Thanks for the replies so far! I too was thinking that probably 4 3/4" would be the best. However this bit would be for a youngster (just starting under tack) and I am having a hard time finding a happy mouth snaffle in that size. I got a 4 1/2" one and put it on him the other day for the first time. It was a little hard to tell exactly how it fit because he was fussing the entire time (it was the first time he'd ever had a bit in his mouth). Didn't seem way too small, but I thought maybe a bit bigger would be better - hence the 4 3/4" thought.

4 1/2" is probably most common for mediums. One of my larges wore a 4 1/2" and the other wore a 4 3/4"

Measure the ponys mouth. Would you believe I had a 16.2 TB that wore a 4.5 inch bit. I had a heck of a time try to find an Eggbut to fit her.
