Hey all... just went to go to a.m. feeds and my maiden mare that's due any day (going by dates, not ph readings) had her tail to me. I saw what looked like blood (major Oh %$#^ moment) but when I got in to see there is a half dollar size wound right beneath the opening of her vulva. It looks more like a chafing sore as opposed to anything open or that would need stitching..but she is not wanting to move, its right where her "butt cheeks" are rubbing together and right where there may be an issue during foaling. Considering how close we are to foaling.. am I safe giving her anything? Topical at least? (I dont want to bug the vet for a call, poor guy he finally got a day off from breeding to be with his family)
Any quick tips would be appreciated...Im keeping her in for the day so she wont have to move so much..

Seriously, olive oil is really good on wounds.

try a colloidal silver product. They work wonders and are super safe to use. I have just started using the product Meso Silver...it's not specifically made for horses but it is a fantastic product. My mare had a laceration inside of her vulva (found it after coming home from Christmas in Ireland) and it had already healed together...but it made a second 'shelf' to the vulva. Well, we had to cut that shelf (about 2 inches long) to allow enough room for baby to come out when she foals....that's right...we had to cut through tissue inside her vulva...EEPS:o:eek::o! Vet stitched the raw edges onto each side of vulvular walls to prevent edges from closing together again. This was done 3 weeks ago and we are currently 3 weeks out from foaling so I was worried about a host of things namely, the tissue being healed over enough to take the strain of foaling without splitting open again. I was using Nolvasan wash and ointment for a couple of days but it was really ooozy and didn't look too good. Since I have worked with silver for a few years now, I decided to see if it would help in this situation. It did! Amazingly so...I mean in a day and a half...the edges and surrounding tissue went from dark, angry, inflammed red to a dark pink and in a few more days it looked significantly better. It took a total of two weeks to completely heal and now looks perfectly normal. It would be worth a try and there are other ways we've used the Meso Silver as well, including getting rid of uterine infections using it as an infusion after lavage. Anyhow, that is my two cents...hope your mare feels better soon!!

Holy smokes! Good luck with the foaling! Ive never heard of Meso Silver-- Ill google it. Thanks! I turned her out today so Ill check if the oil helped. Ph Strips are showing we may have a few days to wait- but then she is a maiden so I dont have any way to know how it will go. It sure wont make it any easier having a big sore right there..
