So there has been lots of talk about color on this board. Yes we all agree that color comes way down on the list below more important things like conformation. However we all have preferences and dislikes when presented with horses of equal quality. SO what do you like???
I only get 10 choices so some colors are grouped together, sorry...

Bright bay is by far my favorite color :)

I would love to have a black, probably because I've never had one.

My next preference would be chestnut, followed by dark brown, then bay.

I agree- I like true black, liver chestnut, single dilutes, and double dilutes. My favorite is smokey cream with no white except maybe a large snip...:D
Of course that is like the most difficult color to come across in the WB world- Sigh...

Seal brown, dark bay and buckskin are my favorites. Light bay not so much. Palomino? Yuck. Not my favorite, unless they are incredibly dark/coppery pal.

Too bad buckskin and palomino are combined on the poll!

The thing is, it IS the icing on the cake (literally and figuratively! ) BUT, at this stage/age in my life, if I'm going to look out the window at it for the next 30 years, I want what PLEASES me most.

I have time to be picky, and the knowledge (genetics) to ice the cake in the frosting of my choice...

All else being equal.

Is blood bay the same as light bay?

I have a couple horses who are reddish bay with black stockings.

Are they light bay?

Blood bay is a deep mahogony (sp?) bay http://www.flickr.com/photos/poseidonsimage/183949841/

and light bay is a sandy brown/tan bay (can be so light to look almost buckskin).

This link shows both a sandy or light bay and a blood or red bay.

Hmm... I've always called a blood bay a really dark red, almost 'maroon' coat, (auburn?) often with the iridescent highlights...

Mahogany, OTOH, is a dark bay, often with almost gold undertones, and usually dapples.

Copper bay is like copper chestnut, with the new-penny iridescence.

Light bay is just that, and "honey bay" can often look just almost like buckskin or dun in summer, without the genetics being there to cause that, of course. ;)

I might be wrong though on blood bay/mahogany? Is it more regional? Like sorrel vs. chestnut etc?

Dark Bay with a tan muzzle and belly, and a little tan around the eyes, and bronzey summer dapples

Of course, that is the exact color of my mare!!! Love her

I have owned two lovely true blacks...they both "came" to me too. I didn't look for them and my purchase wasn't because they were black.
Whenever we are in the public,(often) I have found my black gets the looks over most others....its the Black Beauty/Fury image I believe.
I've often thought that a striking palomino with chrome would be my next choice. Ivory Pal would do nicely IMO...!! (Thats the Trigger thing..I'm of that generation)

My favorite is grey. But you either love 'em or you hate 'em.

Palominos.

But I realized after I bought my palomino that was because every school horse I rode and loved was coincidentally a palomino... so I was unintentionally conditioned :D

I had a tough time. . couldn't choose between "gray" or "buckskin" (or what Connemara people call "dun")

I find it very interesting that despite all the craze about exotic colours and markings, it seems like the favorite remains the timeless black coat...

I voted for multiple colors...I truly have no one favorite color. I love a double or single dilute, a dun or grulla (not mentioned in this poll), I love dark rich bays, paints of all patterns and appies have been a love of mine since childhood. I agree that chrome is a lovely touch! Another stunning color not mentioned is roan. A blue or black roan is lovely...a nice bay roan can be very attractive also with the silvery white body color and dark points.

A blood bay has always been my favorite. I just drool over that rich coat! But I always seem to buy and breed chesnuts with socks and blazes.

I love pintos - a tobiano makes me happy! Have ALWAYS loved them - and every horse I've owned up until a few years back was, drum roll..... SOLID BAY, SOLID BLACK, or SOLID CHESTNUT - chrome was a small head snip or star. So obviously, color doesn't always make the buying decisions, does it?

I also agree with Daydream - what about the roans? When I was a "kid" my favorite lesson horse was a blue roan - Louie, whatever happened to you? That boy could jump the moon! And the bay roans are gorgeous too!

My husband, if he voted, would pick buckskin;)

Sorry about the limited selection of colors and color groups. 10 choices is just not enough!

I voted bay (I think a black-bay) and liver, but I do like black too. Interestingly 3 of my 4 horses are palomino! LOL I do like a really dark palomino. And one of the prettiest sights is a black and a dark palomino at dusk in a deep green pasture. I could stare at that for hours. You would not believe what a lovely sight that is.

That's why I like my grey horse. She's the only one I can see in the pasture at night!

ETA: When I was a kid we used to play hide and seek on horseback at night. I always lost, because my horse was grey, and the girl with the black horse always won.

I've had many horses of different colors, but I think my favorite is Harry's color. He's very dark bay and in Winter looks black, but now has his dapples and you know he's not black.
My Beanie had a fabulous color, like a bright copper penny. He's the one with the '9' halt (he was 24 then). Sally the Connemara was liver-she's galloping away. The photo of the two horses when spotting deer one night is one of my favorites.

I love horses of all colors, but I think Black/Dk. Brown and Chestnut are at the top of the list, with grey close behind.

Well, both of mine are bays. One has a tiny bit of white (small star) and the other has four white legs and a big blaze.

I do love a nice grey. Lilly was a grey. When I bought her, she had the lighter body and the black mane and tail. Just stunning.

I have a thing for coloured horses too.

Two colors not mentioned in the poll that I just love are roans and dun/grullas.

One of the most spectacular colors I've seen is a liver chestnut roan. The body was purple/bluish and the mane/tail/head/points still liver. Just striking!

I also love appies and some sabinos with roany parts. What I find most fun is when they are all mixed up together, like my 3 year old bay dun sabino. He looks pink sometimes and his mane is all sorts of mixed colors.

A good horse is never a bad color. Unless it's a mishmash of paint and appaloosa markings. Then again, I've yet to see this cross with conformation I would consider good, and am pretty sure I'll never see it in any high level of equine sport:lol:

Regular chestnut is my least favourite but I wouldn't penalize the horse for being that color if it was top notch. Quality vs. colour. Always!

I love my chestnut (sorrel) horses, as they don't show the dirt from the local clay as much. And they gleam like a new copper penny! But my fav is a dark liver chestnut with some white. Very flashy :->

I love a champagne of any variety.

But since Trakehners don't come in those colors, I will go with liver chestnut or black, with lots of chrome!

Love me some liver chestnut with lotsa chrome, or a solid liver. I DROOL over liver chestnuts.....maybe someday.;)

I must say that I'm partial to Appaloosa coat colours, but am quite particular about which ones. Provided they're "clean" looking, and not too wild. There's something about the absolute individuality of them that's hard not to love and really appreciate. :)

Otherwise, give me a true black or deep bay with lots of chrome and I'm good.

I voted black, but that's a hard question! :) I also love bright chestnuts with blazes, dark bays, dark golden palominos and sooty buckskins.

I love greys, too - but only when they belong to other people (so I don't have to keep them clean), ha ha.

There are so many variables! I can't choose that easily.

I don't generally like the common solid colors, though bay is my favorite of them. I do like a really rich red bay with dapples, though.

I like dappled gray, but only at the very heavily dappled middle stage - especially when the dapples look like starbursts!

Among the "paint/pinto" categories I tend to like overos better than tobianos. But mostly I like it when the dark color predominates and the white markings are very unusual - such as Splash markings, or complicated overo markings.

I LOVE blue/black roans. I don't love the sabino/rabicano type roaning.

I love buttermilk buckskins and sooty dappled buckskins.

I love dark dappled palominos.

I love the extreme of silver dapple/chocolate where it almost appears the horse is black with a white mane and tail.

I like flaxen chestnuts when the flaxen is very extreme.

I like Appaloosa markings when the horse is predominantly a dark color with a very strongly spotted, defined blanket.

How's that.

What I have: a badly sun-faded seal brown horse, and a plain bay horse. :D

I've always loved a good solid bay or black... but my first was a chestnut mare, then a gray/white gelding... and then a barn full of white horses!!! I guess I've just gotten use to a massive amount of cleaning!

I would love to have a black, but they always seem to be out of my range!!

That Pinto boy from the above poster is super cute!!!

My favorties are deep golden palominos, golden and dark bukskins and pintos too. For those of you who love the deep golden palominos do I have a treat for you... We had a photographer out yesterday taking photos of a bunch of our horses. Three deep golden palominos with snow white manes/tails. Will post links when I get the pictures back.

Only colour I do not really like is a grey, unless it is the steel dappled ones. Though I know that they do not stay that steel colour for long :(

I also like a really shinny dappled cremello. :):) My one guy, Mirabeau, is gorgeous, when he is clean of course ;)

If greys stayed the steele dappled grey that would be my absolute favorite, but unfortunatly they don't.

My favourite is pobably the most elusive. I love liver chestnuts. Preferably with a star and snip, and maybe 4 socks.... (I don't have a wishlist, I swear!)

After that, dark buckskins (that look bay) maybe tobi to top it off. Followed by bays, then palominos.
