I am following the P&E protocol with one of my mares. I have given her some of her injections in the pectoral muscles and she seriously swelled up! Is this a normal reaction or...? She had a stronger reaction to the progesterone shot... I am not really worried but I am still wondering how much normal this is...

As well, today was our first 14-day pregnancy check... and alas, we have our first "not in foal" diagnosis... Darn! Mare has a CL on her left ovary and no oedema. Any chance she might still be in foal?  She double ovulated and was given hCG at insemination. No oxytocin protocol followed, I had given birth the night before and could not be present for the insemination or further short term follow-up work... That'll teach me! We're going to be rechecking her next Thursday to order semen again so I'll have my 100% confirmation of "not in foal" at that moment as well as we'll be at day 20.

When I use the P&E I see swelling more often than not. I usually give it in the pectoral muscles, as well, and sometimes the swelling is quite dramatic.

Thank you Hillside! My vet was just here and I forgot to mention it to her! I am glad to know it is more on the normal end of the scale then the opposite... Injections on her croup don't swell as much so I have been alternating injection sites... The swelling in the pectoral muscles is indeed quite dramatic! She looks like an equine body builder! But she isn't sore or affected in any other way... Thank goodness inspections are two months away!

When I was using P&E a lot, I always rotated the injection sites - pectorals, neck and hamstring. Be sure to inject down lower on the haunch (hamstring area) and not on the top of the croup, so that any problem can drain. I also used the smallest guage needle that would do the job.

One year the medium changed from cottonseed oil (if I remember right) to sesame seed oil. The sesame seed oil caused very nasty swellings.

If I am not mistaken, there is a newer one shot hormone that is very accurate (much better than the old one shot P&E). If I ever go back to timed inseminations, I'll try it to give my ladies an easier time.
