My Selle Francias mare is due in August to have her Red Wine foal. My question is when a stallion is approved by numerous registries, how do you pick one? I am looking at Oldenburg or Rheinland Pfalz. Both have local inspections. Also the baby will only be about 4 wks old when these inspectors roll into town, is that too early? Mare is branded and imported from France if that makes any difference.

Check with the registry about age of the foal. Most require that the foal is at least 6 weeks of age.

Just so you are aware - Redwine has not yet been approved by The Oldenburg Horse Breeders Society, which is the official North American division of the German Oldenburg Verband. I therefore assume you are referring to Oldenburg North America, a privately owned registry which is a division of the International Sport Horse Registry. It is not affiliated with or approved by the Oldenburg Verband.

Redwine may be eligible for a breeding allowance from The Oldenburg Horse Breeders Society, so if they have a later inspection in your area, that may be another option for you. You would need to check with the office to apply for the breeding allowance. www.oldenburghorse.com

Selle Francais horses are accepted in the BWP/NAD. Redwine has not yet been approved by BWP/NAD. BWP allows foals whose sires are approved by other acceptable European registries.

BWP/NAD allows you to present the foal in its yearling year, if it is too young to present as a foal.

Oldenburg/NA will only allow you to register a foal IF both the sire and dam have been presented to them.

But the mare CAN be presented with foal at foot.
