Hi all -

I use generic desiten and SWAT on my old guy's belly and sheath otherwise he turns into a bloody mess . Last year I just used SWAT and was able to use Ivory dish detergent (not the best to use but it's great at grease fighting!) to get it out at the end of bug season. When it's hot out the desiten runs horribly and everytime my guy swings his tail he gets more on it to the point where it is now completely covered (and is disgusting ). Now I can't wash it out - I've tried the Ivory and regular horse shampoos. Any ideas on some shampoos, etc. that will get it out? I hate to see how covered it's going to be come end of summer!

Thanks :).

Dawn Dish Soap.... it works good on the greasy stuff.

If that doesn't work, get a bottle of generic waterproof makeup remover from the drug store or Wal-mart.

Alcohol will remove vaseline after it has been in an outdoor tail with 4 months of built-up dirt & grime. I would imagine alcohol would help with desitin too.

Just make sure to condition it afterwards, as the alcohol is very drying.

And next time, get the easy clean stuff- there is one made by Desitin, and other brands as well. There's a reason they came out with those, getting that stuff off your hands after diapering a baby isn't any fun either ;)

This link says laundry detergent followed by vinegar, to remove both the oil and the zinc oxide.

Balmex makes an easy to clean version of zinc ointment. It is not a gunky as Desitin and does a great job. Comes in a canister.

Simple Green is a great degreaser and is gentle on skin. Be sure to dilute it though!

Mineral oil and a rag. Of course, then you have to get the mineral oil out of the tail, and Dawn should work for that.

Excalibur Sheath Cleaner. It get everything out of tails including manure and other assorted stains. It works on the legs too.

Dawn is the easiest thing that I have found. I have had desitin caked into my mares tail and the dawn works well.
