Please all be very careful in this horrid heat wave. We have been over 100 degrees for 10 days here and its been very hard on the horses. The heat index (what is really feels like, kinda like wind chill)........... has been in the 105-108 range. Its really drained our horses this year and we have to spray them down several times a day and are feeding a lot of electrolytes and such. Some even dont care to eat all of their hay because they are so miserable. Fans, baths, etc - its been extra hard.
Be careful everyone........... this is NASTY heat!

DITTO that. One more foal to go and if the mare can just hold out, this heat is supposed to break today.

ok, had to laugh on that one (just like y'all laugh at us Floridians complain about the "bitter cold" of 32 F!) LOL Sorry - I know that is very very hot for you up there and your horses and yourselves are not used to that heat just as we aren't when it gets cold... just tickeled my funny bone.
Right now I would LOVE to have temps in the 90's. Ok, scratch that today the high will be the actual temp of 99 and heat indexes still in the triple digits (and it is a "cooling trend").
We have had record highs with heat indexes running in the 105 - 115 range since the weekend of June 12th. EVERY DAY. It sucks!!! The horses all have a layer of salt on them when evening comes. It is still in the 80's and 90's at 10 pm... there is no relief. The horses are drinking tons of water (which is great) and I'm scared every single day of colic/dehydration.
Not just for the horses, but this is hard on the humans too!!! PLEASE drink enough water yourselves!!!!!

Yeah - its all relative isnt it?!
We had temps of 34C yesterday and 31C today (that 102F and 94F for you folks that dont want to go metric like the rest of us ... ;) )and the HumidX Index pushed it WAY higher
We've just had a severe thunderstorm / hail system go through so the temps have dropped a lot thank goodness. I also wussed out and brought everyone in - I HATE leaving them out in thunder and lightening and I'm glad I did. The hail was larger than marbles and smaller than golf balls so that would have smarted for sure when they got hit!
Looks like its cleared up now so back out everyone goes once again ...

The therm. on my truck reads 106 a bit ago!! :(
I had to go to the clinic to get a health certificate done and the clinic is full of colics and icky horses.
VERY sad!

Recorded temp yesterday (not the heat index) was 105 in Austin. This is just crazy. 22 month drought, record heatwave and no relief in sight.
