View Full Version : Fly sheet that won't rub sensitive shoulders?

I really want to keep a fly sheet on my OTTB this summer. He's out 24/7 (does have 2 run ins) and there's cows in the field so the flies are horrible.
I've tried this one (http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=X1-24611A&ids=354719434)
But it was too big around his belly and rubbed his shoulders raw
I just got this one (http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=X1-24962A&ids=354719434)
But it also rubbed and it seems to shift a lot.. maybe the stretch?
Also when I say rub I mean 24 hours later he's hairless! I'm willing to spend more money if it'll help. He does have fairly sensitive TB skin but even with MTG and taking it off every now and then i can't seem to make one work

My weatherbeeta fly sheet also rubbed my mare's shoulders raw. I ended up ordering a Bossy Bib from TrueColours for winter blankets, but it has also solved the problem with the fly sheet. Much better than buying multiple fly sheets to find one that works! Plus, the bib does not appear to make her sweat any more.

If you don't want to go that route, you might try this sheet, which has a different type of front closure: http://www.doversaddlery.com/rider%92s-international-hug-fly-horse-sheet/p/X1-24993A/cn/4743/
I was going to try that if the Bossy Bib didn't work, but luckily it did.

Take a serious look at the Schneider's sheets. They seem to have it right with the shoulder gussets - high and forward, where they should be.

Bossybibs seems to be a UK thing, I have a Sleazy (http://www.ss4horses.com/product/solid_shoulder_guard.html) but I was afraid it would be too warm for him.

Schneider's also makes a mesh sleazy... look for it under "mesh hood." Of the flysheets I have tried thus far, the Schneider's softmesh fit my mare the best, but she put a big rip in it... thinking of trying the Amigo Mio next.

This looks interesting, I wonder if I could cut the neck part off and just use it under the fly sheet. I guess I just feel bad having him covered all the way up the neck when it's 90 degrees!

I just bought a Weatherbeeta that is starting to rub. I am searching for someone locally to put gussets in the neck. I had another sheet and had that done(years ago) and it doesn't rub. Unfortunately that sheet doesn't have the UV protection that the new sheet does. If you can find someone to adjust it for you, I would try that route. :)

I like my amigo fly sheet, it has a silky lining on the shoulders to prevent rubs.

FYI: You can purchase the Bossy Bib from TrueColours, who is a COTH member in Canada. Mine came very quick.

Every one of my tb's wears a baker fly sheet and they have no rubs. I love them and they hold up to a lot of hard playing. They are the stiffer kind which I like because I think the air can move under them a bit.

My horse is also shoulder rub prone.
Last year I got her the "Hug" fly sheet, as i had had great success with their other blankets.
It works great!
There isn't a neck attachment option though, but I'm otherwise thrilled with it.

I was thinking of trying the Hug, I don't mind not having a neck cover since he's out 24/7 and I think a neck cover is just another loose piece asking to get snagged!

Fair warning: the Hug won't work for all horses. It's almost perfect for my gelding, but on my mare, it would shift and slip all the way to one side or the other, no matter how I adjusted it. BUT - it didn't give her any shoulder rubs.

Meredith Clark - the Bossys Bibs are manufactured in the UK but I have been distributing them in North America for almost 5 years now ... :)
And along with the darker colours, they also come in white now specifically for fly sheet use in the hotter summer months and since they are totally breathable, the horses wont sweat underneath them
Thanks elctrnc ... :)

My horse has a white Bossy's Bib for summer. It works great, and it doesn't make him sweat.
