We have a gazillion cottontails around here, and in the spring I often see them playing with each other, leaping around, and apparently having a grand old time.

But this morning, as I was heading out to dump the manure, I saw one in the driveway who was standing up - tummy off the ground, as opposed to their usual hunkered down position.

He saw me, turned around, and then leaped straight up in the air about a foot, then kicked his hind legs out in a cute little capriole.

I'm wondering if he had some cactus stuck to him somewhere... whatever the reason, it was way cute.

He/she wants to prance in circles and be a classical dressage bun!

My guess is either you really startled it, or it was playing. I've watched the tiny ones that are sometimes in my side yard play "helicopter bunnies" and do the same thing.

Or, it was on an alfalfa high.

I've seen bunnies leaping in the air before, but never (1) alone and (2) kicking out behind like that.

My friend has a couple of house bunnies... they will periodically do some pretty fancy airs above the ground when they're playing. (:

I have two pet rabbits. They are in the house. They are contained to a big, but safe area by 2 sets of dog exercise pens connected together. I give them fresh veggies every morning. They do some pretty amazing leaps in the morning I think b/c they know they are getting their "treats". I've seen them do that move you described. Fun to watch!
