Ive seen some "interesting" ads for horses for sale or trade and just wondered if anyone has actually traded for something, or heard about any interesting trades?

A friend of mine traded a steady eddy school type horse for a car and it worked out to be win/win for both parties as each had what the other one wanted! :)

Another traded a yearling filly for an ATV and again - worked out perfect for both parties

Ive seen ads where people are looking for horses and will trade their professional services - legal, dentistry, graphic arts, accounting, etc - do any of these deals actually get done at all???

Heck - if there is a nice plastic surgeon out there looking for a nice weanling filly - lets talk! :D Do I have a deal for you!!!

Very curious to hear how creative people have been able to get, in order to get some deals done ... :)

I swapped horses with someone coming up on a year ago. I had an investment horse, a cute little fjord gelding that I broke in to be an all-rounder type. Markets tanked and I just couldn't get him sold. I was approached through his ad by a woman a couple hours from me saying she had a cute paint gelding that was good mover/jumper but could be a bit spooky and he had her number. She had been trying to sell him to no avail but she was just done going through that and was willing to trade if I was after we rode each others. She drove down, we both liked each others enough and she drove off with my fjord. Heard from her a couple months later and she was just in love with him. I re-sold on the paint to somebody in my barn not 2 months later. So it did seem to work all the way around.

I traded 100 photos of a gals mini farm with 3 baby minis for 1/2 starved, blind in one eye not tame mini. I would have taken the photos for free, I could add to my portfolio, but WOW I got a MINI!

I def. got nice photos to brag about and my kids have a summer project to love.

Although for some reason she feels she got the better deal (my hubby agrees with her :))

I once swapped a steady-Edwina appendix QH mare, for a not-so-steady, ever-so-flashy Trak/TB mare. QH mare's owner got something she could learn how to horseshow on, and I got a nice (if edgy) advanced lesson mare that I later sold on to a former "B" pony clubber. Last I heard, both mares were doing well.

When we used to cut our own hay, we did some fun trading around. A lady came to buy hay out of the field and asked if we needed any tack. (I was at work) got a call from DH wanting to know if I had ever heard of a Hermes saddle. We were selling the hay for $1.50 a bale in the field, 250 bales for a saddle. yep we'll take it:yes: I'm still riding in it. VERY used but what the hay.

We have had the same family building fences, when we needed more than a little stretch built, for us since 1920's, when they would come with horses and wagon, work all week here and drive the team home for the weekends.

One year long ago, they were working here one summer and fell in love with a very nice yearling filly, that kept following them around as they worked.
They offered to trade some of their fence work for her and some basic training under saddle the next spring.

That worked fine for all, we got some more fences built and they had a very nice filly to enjoy for the whole family to ride, that they kept into old age.

Not really a trade per say...

I picked up a very skinny teenage gelding that was supposed to be really calm and quiet. He had been passed around a bit. A few hundred in feed and vet visits and the guy is a bit of a nutball. I managed to track down the original owner (not who I got him from) through the old trainer to get some more info on him. She was horrified at what had happened to him and said she would take him back if it didn't work out.

Well, it didn't work out and she did take him back. She is a super nice lady. In California you aren't really allowed to give horses away for free so I took home 18 of the best farm fresh eggs I have ever eaten. White, brown, and green. They put the store bought ones to shame.

LOL! Did hubby call and pronounce it "Hermez" or did he pronounce it "Air-maize"?

:D He said Hermez, (I said WHAT???!!)
Pretty funny, he took it to take a lesson on, because it actually fit him, and one of the snottier hunter girls there said. Huh I've NEVER heard of that brand. The trainer came over and was pretty funny, he told her to buy better magazines. Then wanted to know if he would sell it. ;)

He learned to say it 'right'.
The same lady had our # we had hay (usually) and she had 'stuff'. We did pay for 1/2 my DH OTTB with hay.
But that was the best!

We traded a yellow umbrella cockatoo for a blue speckled bass boat. Hubby was thrilled. I was when the boat sold.

We traded hay for a manure spreader last year-- spreader was for sale on craigslist and hubby was cutting hay at the time. So, after I looked at it and decided I wanted it, I asked "you don't happen to need any hay do you?" and they did need some. Gotta love it.:)

We had an older 4-Wheeler that needed work, still went, but probably wouldn't forever with farm use, had a guy trade him an 18 Volt DeWalt Drill, an 18 Volt DeWalt Impact Wrench, and a 1967 "Meucci Original" Pool Cue in Great condition. The Pool Cue is valued between $5k and $10k because of condition and age.

When I was a teenager, my dad traded a three year old gelding for an old Cadillac that needed some work. Never did get the work it needed done and it sat around on blocks for a couple of years until he traded it off for a .30-.06 deer rifle. Which he never used either.

A couple of other times he traded horse for horse, but I don't know if any money to boot went in on the deal on either end.

Twice I've traded a horse for a horse. One was a good trade, the other not so much.

I've traded lessons for jump standards (student's DH was a carpenter) and training for a horse-drawn mower.

We've done legal work, dental work...gosh...so much stuff! I've traded lots of horsey services but never an actual horse. Once they get here, they stay here

After being snowed in for the umpteenth time this winter, we traded a draft gelding we didn't need for a snowmobile ;). Of course now we will most likely have many snowless winters :lol::lol::lol:.

I traded a really unpleasant old horse trainer for a Border Collie puppy.

In a moment of madness that lasted several years, I was dating a crabby older trainer. Some fun times, but I was a fool. He told me I was too dumb to train a horse and shouldn't ever even think about a dog.

Finally broke that off (with a restraining order necessary, guy was a poor loser) and went to a show next week where I got my pup. That dog (sitting obediently at my feet as I type, gazing at me with unconditional love) was worth any number of over the hill trainers- eight years later, still a most excellent trade!

 I traded a JR pup and $300.00 for a lovely TB yearling filly, who turned into an absolutely great field hunter and turns 19 tomorrow. And once we traded 5 4' X 6' windows and 200 bales of hay for a breeding to a stallion. My husband will barter welding work for a lot of things he wants/needs around here. If we can barter for something, it makes it easier for all concerned around here!

Some friends of mine are starting a photography business, and they want to get into horses. I'm trading advice (I mean, "consulting services") for free pictures.

I rode for them last week so they could practice timing their action shots, and the pictures look fabulous! Next week we're practicing portraits - can't wait.

I've traded

a free breeding for training . . . worked out great, made lifelong friends.
a yearling and weanling for a proven show mare.
a 'color challenged' halter broodmare for a beautiful tobiano sport type filly.
and most recently, an hour or so of working with one of my horses for a couple pieces of homemade pie (Coconut and Chocolate);)
Also baked pies one winter to pay the booking fee on an outside stallion. . .

Hey, I live in the 'real world', so I love to be creative . . . my to do list is so long . . . but I hate to mention it too much in my ads because then it seems like people don't think your colts are worth as much . . .

I traded a used electric stove (came with a house I bought) for a 2 year old Appalachian singlefoot filly. 10 years later, my skinny niece still has her as she didn't grow big enough for me. I doubt the stove has held up as well!

I love to trade!

I used to have a diamond business . . . I traded a quite large diamond for a fantastic 1965 chevy convertible in GREAT condition. Drove the car for 2 months, then sold it on eBay (out of state) for $4000 more than I was asking for the diamond. Found out the person was about to declare bankruptcy and figured they could hide a diamond easier than a car . . . oops!

Also had someone give me a lovely unbroke saddlebred mare (she was in a bad financial situation and needed to get ride of her right away). I traded her for a cute large pony that the owners THOUGHT was broke - turned out to be a great little trail horse.

Earlier this year I had an ad on dreamhorse to trade a $5000 diamond ring (1+ ct.) for a nice pony club horse for my daughter - got TONS of responses (although nothing I was willing to trade . . . ).

My neighbor traded a kinda crazy paint mare that she couldn't ride (I could ride her just fine but wasn't in the market at the time) for a riding lawnmower. She was happy with the trade.

Equilibrium

Mr. Equilibrium dabbles in car sales and is also a "trader" by nature so things get quite interesting living with him.

Traded an SUV type vehicle to a woman for a Dutch/Irish Draught filly whom we sold to the States. Also, we got cash to go with the vehicle as woman had filly priced well below car price.

Most recently we got a car, a boatload of breaking and racing tack in exchange for 1 months training fees. Sold the car for more than the training and still have some tack we could move. I really despise the "racing" saddles that came with the deal, but Mr. Equilibrium is quite fond of them.

Last week he got a 2yo Gypsy Vanner gelding for some fence fixing and winter hay for the the 2yo's mother during the winter.

Let me see, I know we have some more out there type of things.

We got a BMW 4 years ago in exchange for a few weeks keep and we only just sold that. That has to be a record for any of our vehicles - 4 years almost permanent.

Came home with 2 brand new pair of clippers and a quad one day. And for the life of me I can't remember what we traded. I do believe a strimmer was involved but since we seem to have them coming and going I just can't remember. Oh and we got a trailer to go with the trailer from my brother in law in exchange for Mr. Equilibrium doing some training on one of his horses.

Look it, if your talking trades I seriously doubt you will beat Mr. Equilibrium. Trust me, he never ceases to amaze me! But at the end of the day he's all about as little cash leaving his pocket as possible - that's very Irish by the way, and we have aquired some very useful stuff over the years!

I've not traded any horses. But horse-related, I traded my tractor for a custom made saddle. Best deal ever ... my saddle is awesome! Very plain (which is how I wanted it), but comfy and perfect for the cow horse events!:)

I traded a lovely confirmation hunter prospect for a made novice event horse. (Bad trade... he was cold backed and a moose, I couldn't ride him. :( )

Then my neighbor moved and had two un-broke, nutty horses she couldn't take with her, so she gave them to me. We traded them, my cold backed moose, and $200 for my current mare who is absolutely lovely and I will never part ways with.

A bad deal that turned out good...

I traded a futon frame (a nice, solid maple queen-sized one) for some plumbing work. Yep, by a licensed plumber or whatever they have to be... he was doing some other work and did this "off the cuff" so to speak.

The funny thing is, the futon had been put together wrong by the furniture store. It was one of those places that sell nothing but bedroom furniture, mattresses, and futons, yet it took a plumber to see that it had been assembled incorrectly and that was why it had always stuck when folded up!

Traded a more than slightly insane Morgan "pony" (she was probably 13.3 on a good day) for an almost 2-year-old Morgan mare... they LOOOOOOVED the insane Morgan and gamed on her, I looooooooved the 2-year-old who grew up to be my Horse of a Lifetime - we all won :)
