View Full Version : NEED HUGE, HUGE jingles for badly injured horse-VERY sad update

Hey all I need a mountain of jingles for a morab we have here-Eddie. Eddie has always been a screwball and accident prone but this time it's realy serious. In the past he's nearly put an eye out, fractured his skull-just messing around. His owner lives out of state.

He has damaged his neck and is exhibiting terrible ataxia and can't coordinate this body. Vet has been out, he's had IV DMSO, Banamine, Dex.

We noticed it this AM and I managed to get him out of the pasture and when he went down, and me on top of him, I kept him down, administered Banamine and lightly sedated him until the vet arrived. When he was able to stay down for about 45 minutes-1 hour-that's how long it took for the vet to get here, he was able to stand up, walk himself into a stall, stood for the vet to do her thing. His back was not roached up, no ataxia really, almost like his old self.

Now he's back to being very ataxic. I called the vet again and we are back to lightly sedating him to keep him down and quiet. We are tiptoeing in the barn so not to disturb him-he's a action kind of guy.

I am worried sick as I love this little ADD horse.

So I need all the jingles you can spare. The next 24-48 hours are really critical.

He's a wonderful boy. He's only 6.

**it's 10:00 PM and we just got back from delivering Eddie's body to Cornell Necropsy. His condition was deteriorating depite the efforts and it was decided the best thing was to euthanize him. This happened about 6:30 PM. Our local fire department came with a winch and helped us get him into our trailer.

You try to disassociate yourself to these surreal events in your life. 24 hours ago he was a happy ADD horse. Oh, the stories about him from us would make you probably bust a gut from laughing. He as such a character. Tonight we only told good Eddie stories.

My 15 year old daugther handled it SO well. She hopes to be a large animal vet someday and despite being able to witness some amazing things, I alway shield her from things such as this. She's still my baby afterall.

Eddie is now up in heaven with are other beloved animals and my dad. Eddie loved being here and we so enjoyed having this funny, screwball of a young horse. We had the honor of having Eddie twice in for training-for extended periods of time too. He spent much of his young life here with us. I cannot even express just how much he will be missed.

In honor of him for his owner, when our mare's foal, who is about to foal at any time, will be named Eskimo Dreams. See Eddie's name was Dreams in Eskimo.

Thank you everyone who jingled so much. It has poured rain here since his death and my daughter said tonight, "It's raining so hard mom b/c God is crying for Eddie". I know I am crying loads of tears too.

God Bless you Eddie. Thank you for being such a part of our lives. You will never be forgotten.

I only ask because one of my goats once picked up a protozoa and had symptoms of ataxia.

Good luck.

A friend had a weanling injured that displayed those symptoms.
X rays showed a broken neck, the first vertebra.
They kept him very confined, eventually he could go out and this year they are riding him lightly without trouble, so there is hope your horse will come thru.

Those things just take good supportive care and your horse is getting that and oodles of time.

Best wishes for an uneventfull recovery.

Thanks everyone! You all are going to make me cry. I just administered more light sedation. When he heard me enter the stall, he was down dozing, he stood up and was much more steady on his feet.

I will be doing this round the clock to him so we work on keeping him quiet and hopefully he will mend.

THANK YOU for the jingles. Keep them coming!! He still needs them.
If he needs 6 months stall rest we are up to meet that challenge. I've done it before and I am committed to doing it again.

SEPowell, they did take blood but given the nomanclature I think it's an unfortunate fooling around accident.

Oh I hope the accident prone boy gets better soon. You were so nice to help me when Carol Lush had her problems and the person I found thru your friend got her horses back for her, thanks to you and to the NYPD mounted patrol.

Keep Eddie sedated and drugged up with pain killers for 48 hours and hopefully he'll feel better so he can get into more mischief.

You are so helpful to others, I hope someone in your area will spell you and help take care of him while you try to get some rest.

You took good care of him for as long as you could, and you were a very responsible horse owner. He was lucky to have you. A lot of people (see other threads) would have sold him off due to his tendency to get into trouble. So you did the best anyone could have for him in the short time that he lived. Hopefully his namesake will not be accident prone, altho I think our horses do things to test our mettle.

Hi everyone, thanks for your support. Eddie was a special horse in many ways. He just passed his 5th birthday so it's pretty shocking for a healthy, sound, sturdy horse in training to cross the rainbow bridge. Anyone who met Eddie had a story to tell. He was a result of a breeding between my old style mostly Lippitt Morgan mare and an Arabian, HG Esquire.

A few pics:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y120/EsKhemo1/eddie.jpg

Eddie as a baby, he loved his big boy flymask.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v695/jjstardust/Eddieflymask.jpg

He's spent a significant amount of time at living and training at Classic Sport Horses where he was absolutely happy and always looking good. I had plan to take Eddie to some shows at the end of the season. It's very shocking to lose a horse that had so much promise and who was so young. It was even harder having him so far away. I've had to make decisions like this a few times in my life but never one that came with so much devastation and heartache.

I would like to thank Jean for all her hard work with Eddie and for her utmost dedication until the very end. I am so thankful that she was there to help him on his final day. I feel like she really understood my horse as well as I did. Both Jean and the vet were so helpful to me. I have opted to have a necropsy done in hopes to provide some closure and provide useful information.

I just got a call from Eddie's vet about his necropsy results from the pathologist at Cornell. They found some bruising along his neck and spine but feel it's a result from his seizures. They took some tissues samples and will have results from that testing in about a week.

Your horse's symptoms sound like our horse that died with West Nile Virus.
He had been vaccinated, but the vaccine is only 95% effective and I guess he fell thru the cracks there.
I expect they will look for any encephalitis type lesions also.

It is very hard to lose any horse, if it is yours or not, just seems so sad.:(

Eddie was also vaccinated but like you say it's only effective to a certain point.

I am guessing they looked for lesions but I have no idea. I never had to have a necropsy done on a horse before. Would this be included in a basic necropsy?

If you don't mind could you please detail your horse's symptoms and how long they lasted before he passed?

I really want to add that this has been difficult since I live about 6 hours from CSH and could not be there in Eddie's last moments. Although maybe that was for the better:confused: given the nature of his death. But I do feel really good about Jean being there for him. He truly loved Jean and loved living there under Jean's training and care. Jean has been very generous in helping me through this tough time. You hope you never go through stuff like this but when it does happen you become very thankful to have someone like Jean in charge. I cannot thank her enough for her care and support. I don't think I could have trusted anyone more than I trusted Jean with Eddie. Especially when it came time to make the final decision.

I also want to thank Denise Gainey who owns HG Esquire, Eddie's sire. She has been very helpful in helping me through this difficult time. She has been there from before he was born all he way to the end. I feel blessed to be surrounded by such good horse friends.

I only know second hand, as my horse was at a friends, had supposedly been sold but somehow was still there.
That Saturday afternoon, after bringing them in and feeding them, they put him in the small yard by the office to watch him, because he was not eating, but didn't seem to be sick, just not his perky self.
In the next hour, he just wandered a little bit around, went to the bathroom, so it didn't seem to be colic and then, without warning, he started having seizures, throwing himself down, flopping around and getting up and stumbling and they called me, I am one hour away and the vet ten minutes away.
They called me as I was starting over there and said not to come, that he had hit his head on the wall of the office and died and the vet was there, taking blood and has said it looked like WNV, that later was confirmed.

It was the second year WNV was in our area and he had been vaccinated.

Sorry, I don't know any more, but they said he was very violent and they could not get to him safely and then it was over.

The vet said that it hits some that fast and others are just sick for some time and then recover.

Don't really know what your vets will do in the necropsy, but with neurological symptoms, I would think they would rule any kind of encephalitis out, WNV and EEE, WEE and such others.

Hello all, I just needed a day to collect myself and thoughts concerning all that happened and our beloved Eddie. He was a remarkable boy. No words can convey just what a character and bright star he was. Nor can simple words convey the sorrow and heartache.

I want to thank Gail for entrusting me with her boy and for such extended periods of time both times he came here. If my calculations are correct this last time we had Eddie here for over a year. All horses who come here are part of the family but Eddie was more special to us.

At times Eddie was not easy but he was never ever dangerous. He was so full of life and as this tragedy unfolded I searched all of the recesses of my mind to come up with options to help him. Because it was not safe of me to be in his stall at times, we would hang over the front (he was in stall with no bars) and give him medications as he lay on the floor. I was planning to sleep in the next stall all night to keep an eye on him and of course I just kept asking God to let him stay with us. God has different plans for Eddie.

One of the photos that Gail posted, the one where he has a cursingle on, was taken at our place. He is the only horse I have ever taught to ground drive where I had to use a tie down-because Eddie when excited used to do that "arab head swing". I used baling twine to tie it to the side rings (not quite as side reins).

"Schmed" as we used to call him made everyone notice him-heck even the neighbors knew him b/c until we put him in with my broodmares, he got out of every pasture we have-yes we have hot fencing! If he got out and you went to go get him, he'd just walk right up to you and say "hello". No running around, no antics, it was as if he was waiting for you.

Our farm is different now that Eddie is gone. He was a spark that burned out way to quickly.

Thank you so much for all of your words of condolence. They are so appreciated.

Jean

Last night Eddie's attending vet called me with more results from Cornell. At this point they strongly suspect that he suffered from Hyperammonemia Syndrome which is extremely rare. I do take some comfort in knowing that he did not have anything preventable, treatable, and for once he didn't do it to himself. I'm hoping he becomes a case study and gets his case published in a journal. I also hope something can be learned from his passing.
