There were cookies??

How did I miss that? (I volunteered last year--was a bit checker during the "Dust Bowl", along with Classic Melody...they got a water truck out there after that experience )

I know they provide wine and cheese...I'm volunteering at the first one (and bringing one of my young students along with me to volunteer; meaning I will have to go easy on the wine :sigh:), and am riding in the second one (plus coaching.)

Since I've been out of the loop for... a long time!... where are they located? I'm in DE and might be able to help out.

I will be there volunteering on the 12th, as will Mr catalina and our son. Look for a big guy driving the shuttle, possibly with a blonde 6 y.o. (if he gets bored XC jump judging with me). I am looking forward to it and I hope it isn't 10,000 degrees ;).

The horse trials are located in Adamstown, MD - in Frederick County. Here is the website: www.mdhorsetrials.com (http://www.mdhorsetrials.com)

A huge thanks to those of you who have already signed up to volunteer!:D

Tell your hubby to wear one of those painter's face masks to cover his mouth. Otherwise, he'll be coughing up stuff for days like I did last summer after all the dirt I took through the air and down into my lungs when I was doing the shuttle duty.

Will do; thanks for the tip! :D

Catalina - have you brought your son along to volunteer before??? I have been thinking of doing that, but if said youngster gets totally bored, not sure what I would do then!

I haven't brought him before, but I talked to Carolyn and she said that kids were welcome. I figure that I will bring his fully charged Nintendo DS and lots of games (I might even get him a new one ;)) and that should occupy him for awhile. He will also be able to ride around with Daddy in the golf cart if he wants. Hopefully I will get a XC jump where he can also play in the woods close by without getting in the way. I am also hoping that the excitement of seeing horses gallop by every few minutes will be interesting to him; I will probably figure out a way to make a game of it.

That was memorable, wasn't it?

I'll be there on 11th on XC somewhere.

I might be able to help. I will know more after I start my internship this week. Sounds like it could be a lot of fun and a good place to meet MD people.

have they sent out e-mail inquiries to past volunteers? I have volunteered there in the last couple of years, but haven't heard anything from them this year. I can't always do both the summer and fall horse trials, but try to help out at least once each year.

Funny - the Nintendo DS was on my mind as well if I bring the princess to volunteer!

Glad to hear that Carolyn says kids are welcome - I may have to join you!!!

Flying into the area one weekend off, rats! I'd love to help otherwise.

Classic Melody !

Yes, let's hope for NO repeats of that experience!

Maybe I'll see you, since I too will be volunteering on the 11th; I did offer to JJ (figuring I could get a preview of the P course which I will be doing the following weekend ;)), but if they need me to do something else (dressage steward, bit checker, etc.), I have no problem with that. I will probably try to go check out the course at some point anyway, perhaps with my 13 year old student in tow (they are going to try to get her to be a dressage runner or something, even though she has JJed several times by herself.)

Catalina, too bad I will miss seeing you (and your family), since you will be there the following day! Good luck entertaining your son, and let's hope it's not too hot. My hubby and daughter (and I) all volunteered at Surefire one summer 3 years ago--she was 11 going on 12 at the time, and helped out hubby with the "recording of riders who went clear" part (he had multiple jumps for 3 different levels), but got bored and hot and a bit whiney; since I had to coach a BN student in the afternoon, I wasn't able to "spell" poor hubby, so daughter just had to suck it up--plus we had the dog with us! Fortunately Surefire has hot and cold running golf carts coming by almost *constantly* to keep the volunteers hydrated; also, we were in the shade. They really are the best (in terms of how they treat volunteers) of any of the Area II HT's I've personally volunteered at so far.

But I am ALWAYS more than happy to help out Carolyn and Co. if and whenever possible :)

I'll be there jump judging both weekends and also helping to train dressage volunteers in the mornings. I'm looking forward to it - Loch Moy does an awesome job catering to their volunteers, plus the facility is gorgeous!

I just signed up online, I know I was slacking. Hopefully they will still have a spot for me to help. I helped at a few of the horse trials at the horse park in woodside, CA, so I won't be a total newbie to train.

Hubby and I are driving up from Lexington Saturday night to help on Sunday, the 19th. I think I am being stadium scribe and I think he is timing X/C. Would have helped both days, but he has to work at his real job on Saturday :(

Come say hi if you see me...the boxer pup with the red backpack is hard to miss!!

Thanks for the PM Tazzie! I did get an email from Ellen, but it didn't have any information on which day and whether or not I would be needed for the whole day. I will see if I get a response from her and if not I will give you a call. See you guys this weekend!
