I just bought some AWESOME green breeches to ride at home in (I love color!) and was wondering... My XC are green(lime/kelly.. whatever I can find) and Navy... could I wear my green breeches and my Navy polo out on XC without looking too bright and ridiculous?

For the love of all things good and holy, please don't. You CAN, but please, please don't. I am the first to fall in love with a great color of britches, but I leave them at home when I get dressed for a competition.

I personally love color on XC... and something that stands out certainly makes it easier to differentiate you from someone else if you have an issue you need to bring up with the jump judges or TD afterward.
The key, IMO with color is the brighter the color, the less/ fewer items there should be of it. So if it's bright breeches don't go overboard with everything else.

Everything else I have is pretty boring. I have a navy pad with green piping and I am looking for lime boots for my horse. My crop is lime and my helmet is navy and it will have a green strip. (I have the IRH with interchangable strips and y dad is trying to make one for me that is green). Is that too much green with the breeches?

What she said. Unless you are under the age of 12 and/or have a super super adorable pony (e.g., anyone who rides a Fjord), then it's marginally ok. Otherwise, it is, what we affectionately call, A Bit Much.

When I was a kid my colors were kelly green and white. My mom gave me some custom designed bright kelly britches for xmas. She was so excited I was basically required (by guilt) to wear them for the next 4 years on every XC course. I looked like a long, skinny grasshopper up there with my green legs all folded up in jumping position. The pictures haunt me to this day.

It's just like with your black/blue helmet/coat question: if you like it, wear it. Seriously, no one will or should care what you have on as long as it's within the rules.

i think.. as long as you have a "theme" .. like its all the same green or your main color is one and your accent color is another.. you will look sharp.. also.. it kinda depends on the color of your horse.. like my mare is dark dark dark black.. and then i put a bright bright bright yellow pad with white trimming so the white is up against the black.. with yellow boots and white tape.. and i have a yellow and white helmet cover.. the yellow pops because its on a dark horse and the white pops because is right up against the black.
theres a girl at my barn who does lime green and navy blue and it looks good... the blue is the trimming.
also purple and lime green look great together!

And here is a sweet kid from our barn, black horse, and her bright red breeches... I think they look great. A little color on the helmet, the pad... but not OMG over the top. (And yes, she got in big trouble for that leaper...)

If you are comfortable with people staring at your bright green butt as you ride, go for it. :D Me, I like to call as LITTLE attention as possible to my riding skills, so I'm all about gray.

I say go for it as long as it's tasteful. I wouldn't go out in neon green britches but a toned-down green wouldn't be too bad.
I just had a custom pad made for x/c that is so SUPER DUPER COOL I can hardly stand it!!! My horse has a bald face and I've always liked the Phantom of the Opera reference for him (that was his name when I bought him) so I had a pad made that's black with varying shades of blue piping and a Phantom of the Opera mask on either side. I can't wait to show in it this weekend!!

Why don't you get a custom Tipp? They will do anything you want so then you could get green and yellow in one vest!!
I don't really do bright colours (all black with a touch of red) but I have two custom vests from them and they are cool.

lol..same here...also don't like to call attention to my big a$$!
You can wear whatever you want.
Me...I don't color coordinate at all. My horses wear what boots are clean....I typically don't change my breeches from dressage (so typically beige...since this big a$$ doesn't look good in white breeches)....and shirt is whatever I grabbed that morning. I have an older black vest as a spare and a newer navy one. Didn't really care what color they were when I bought them.

I'm thinking, knowing you all, that there's a pretty clear delineation of opinions here: the kids say "yes", the grown-ups say "ugh - no". Don't take this the wrong way, but which would you rather have people see when they watch you ride? A brightly-festooned kid ("has to be a kid on that horse, no adult would wear that...") or a competent rider who isn't quite as, uh, bright?

when i was a young rider i rode in a pair of fushia pink courdury breeches..They were pretty neat.. when i went intermediate i decided that i should probally wear something a bit less colorful..i did for a while but now i have a pink vest and a pink and black helmet cover....yea, not much better, but hey its a lot easier to find ya when you are going x-c....what ever you want to wear x-c is good to go...

Please...you must have photos, right?!
I'm with the camp that says wear what you want and have fun! My pony is loud enough, he needs no help...and I'm a conservative type dresser anyway...but I enjoy looking at the colors, especially on the kids.
As a side benefit if your outfit is loud or silly enough to get a giggle or two out of you or passerby as you get ready, head to the start box, or run the course, it may help you relax!

I'm an adult and I say go for it. Personally, I think neon colors would be great...people to blinded to see your riding 'style'......
So long as the green looks good on you and you like it, do what you want within the rules.

Do whatever is fun for you. I kind of admire the people in gaudy colors.....as I shop for black, tan, white.....
There is a local rider decked out in bright orange who rides several horses, one is a flashy, scopey black. They are fun to watch and easy to find on course. If I rode that well, I might consider more color.

Please don't go as far as the girl in my area who SPRAYPAINTED her horse's mohawk LIME green. With lime boots, vest, shirt, helmet . . .
Should I also mention the horse was a 17 hand buckskin and white PINTO?
It was very . . . memorable.

I stood next to Denny about 15 years ago ( yikes) at the rail of the GMHA xc warm-up and we just clucked & shook our heads at some of the stuff people were wearing. As the Fashion Police were nowhere to be found, we were forced to allow these ( mostly kids) to proceed to their respective cross-country rides to blind those unfortunate enough to witness their rides.
Please, please, please, this is not about wearing a costume, it is about tasteful ( I prefer conservative) attire that does not detract from your stellar horsemanship and your steed's talents.
And don't get me started on the old "petal" bell boots, you know, the purple & pink and glitter ones....

Ok, from a photographers point of view, I think it's great. I would be able to follow you easier ;). But, on the other hand, bright colours can make a photo look weird, because the brightness overpowers every thing else.
Eg, this is actually quite a bright yellow. BUT, because he is grey, and it blends with him, it looks quite alright, and was quite pleasant to photograph, because every time I looked through the lens, I wasn't getting blinded.
http://s177.photobucket.com/albums/w222/mandaleacalico/Phtography/
And as another rider, unless it is tasteful, and goes excellent with your horse, I wouldn't. Unless it made my butt look smaller
You must gets us a picture of you in them, so we can get a verdict :D

Ok, so the horse with pink saddle pad, neon green girth, one neon pink and one neon green bellboot, etc at the Waredaca unrecognized elicited much consternation from those of us watching - did I mention the horse was pinto (http://www.photoreflect.com/pr3/orderpage.aspx?pi=0EBK009Z240012&po=12). After that we started commenting on colors. The consensus seemed to be, bright ok if well coordinated and not actually neon (http://www.photoreflect.com/pr3/orderpage.aspx?pi=0EBK009Z3U0009&po=9). Multiple shades of a color are undesirable. You get a pass on large amounts of pink if you are a cute girl riding a pony, but better if pony is a mare as we were concerned that the geldings would be mortified. The two different bell boots is problematic even if you are a kid. Photo links following by GRC. Yellow looks surprising good on chestnut (http://www.photoreflect.com/pr3/orderpage.aspx?pi=0EBK009Z3N0005&po=5), as did tasteful purple (http://www.photoreflect.com/pr3/orderpage.aspx?pi=0EBK009Z290008&po=8), which also seemed nice on the dark bay (http://www.photoreflect.com/pr3/ThumbPage.aspx?e=4843603&g=0EBK009Z42). I admit to purple tape on my jumping boots (pre-dalmar days) and sometimes navy breeches, but nothing brighter.

As of immedietly anyone trying to have fun via neon colors, colored breeches or smiling will be penalized with a "this is a serious sport people no fun allowed" point. This penalty is good for any color that offends the spectator, overly cute horse/rider combos, small children on large horses, small children on small ponies doing novice, adults doing BN or below with an extra penalty if they trot anything or are riding a pony, or anything not a bay TB in general.

I'm all about making it as easy as possible, plus I'm lazy, so I just wear the same beige breeches for all 3! That and the big ass factor! No drawing attention to it anymore then it does for itself!
I love pink on little girls, hot, bright colors are cool, but not really on big girls!

I have a pair of sage green ts breeches that I wouldn't hesitate to wear with my navy and white at a competition... but I usually just sport beige because then I don't have to change. Lol. And at a 3 day, I'll try to keep clean and wear the same pair each day to cut down on laundry.
However, the green is very subtle and goes well with navy. I have no other green as it isn't part of my "colours" of navy and white. lol. Yes i'm boring, but when I was a kid I was bright red and royal blue and LOTS of it. lol.

I've mostly done one-days, so just wore a white polo with white or beige pants, and my green XC vest. I wore a light-blue top once for a Hunter Pace that I thought worked pretty nicely: http://www.daskerphoto.com/Gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=14970
I *have* worn bright pants before, but they were orangy rust, with a lighter orange top (it violated the two shades rule that scubed mentioned, but I had several compliments on it). I think rust is considered to be fairly conservative, though, and the horse wasn't dressed to match (although his coat is a bit orangey - this particular one (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3309/3617783853_023cefe3ee.jpg) is @ a H/J show, so I'm wearing a white polo with charcoal coat, but I wore the same for stadium, then switched to the orange/green shown schooling (http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1012/1184064589_0779b64793.jpg) xc (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3196/2812539535_e8628f0596.jpg). I loved that they hide dirt nicely! I also showed at a couple of H/J shows in chocolate brown (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2201/2082959264_770f7f5864.jpg) breeches (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2310/2082959276_e0ebc68937.jpg), before I got new ones of a different colour. My instructor said the colour was discouraged, but for XC, I don't think anyone would object to them.
