View Full Version : Books on how to train a young horse?

A month ago I bought a 3 yo draft cross mare who "spoke" to me on the internet! I wasn't really looking for another horse, but was drawn to her as she is a Clyde/TB cross like my wonderful mare, Shay Darra, and I just loved the look on her face! Hubby was not thrilled, but that's a story for another day.
Shay was an unstarted 5 yo when I got her, but I sent off for 90 days initial training and then took it from there. My trainer encouraged me to go for a "project" as I've done a good job with my mare, who is now 9.
We are lunging and doing a bit of riding in the round pen at the moment. New mare knows nothing! We are at absolute ground zero. My question - are there any books you can recommend for starting the young ones? I'm comfortable at the moment with what we're doing, but I also like to learn from others.
Thanks for suggestions.

Pippa has one (I don't remember the title) as does Richard Maxwell (From Birth to Backing) but the best for us is Ingrid and Reiner Klimke's "The New Basic Training of the Young Horse." We also used the "old" version of this book until the "new" one came out. It's going to be a grand adventure - have fun.

This is an excellent book. It is lays out the progression of training well and provides a good plan for introducing jumping.

I have the old edition, signed by the master himself! What are the new parts? Are they written by Ingrid?

I cannot think of it right now, but there is a great training book by one of the instructors of the Spanish Riding School.
Reiner Klimke's 'Training the Young Horse' is also good.
You might also want to pick up a basic John Lyons or Clinton Anderson type book to get a better understanding of young horse psychology.

I have an almost 3 yr old that I am working with and Pippa's book is wonderful. She even has trouble shooting that is helpful if there are issues along the way. Congrats on the new horse they are so fun to work with when they are babies...

One of THE BEST books I've read. This link shows randomly selected pages, so you can browse through. VERY correct and really covers everything from weaning through jumping and dressage.
