The female moose, estimated to be 1˝ years old, was perhaps interested in entering one of the races for 2-year-olds. But given that the track doesn't begin its season until next month, Bullwinkle is both a little early and a little young :)

And it's Bullwinkle by a nose -- a really big nose -- at Saratoga Race Course. A large moose wandered onto the grounds of the historic upstate New York racetrack where the likes of Man o' War and Secretariat have run. Police said the moose was first reported walking through the city's downtown business district shortly before 4 a.m. Monday.

A female moose became an instant Saratoga celebrity Monday when she wandered through downtown and past Siro's before stopping at Saratoga Race Course for some modeling and relaxation.

After the moose spent several hours milling around and resting in front of the main general admission gate, state wildlife officials shot it with two tranquilizer darts and loaded it onto a trailer for release in the Adirondacks.

At this time of year, only the Oklahoma training track is open for training, and the majority of horses are stabled on that side of the facility. There was a Skidmore College horse show taking place on the grounds of the main track, but the moose didn't get near any of those horses.

The Saratogian was having a bit more fun with this story (http://www.saratogian.com/articles/2009/06/16/news/doc4a364e27305ab790389653.txt) - excerpts

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A loose moose was too early to get a bobblehead and couldn’t find a picnic table near the Big Red Spring.

Her memorable outing apparently included a night on the town, because she was spotted running south on Broadway at about 3:45 a.m. Monday, before heading to Siro’s Restaurant, where she couldn’t get dinner, but was admitted to the track where officials corralled her before administering a tranquilizer dart shortly before noon time.

The moose wandered back and forth between the main Union Avenue gate and admission turnstiles for most of the morning, looking just like a “spinner” on giveaway day.

As much as she might want to be the next Rachel Alexandra, for now the young moose will have to content herself with living in the wild.

“We had to inform her that at the moment we can only conduct thoroughbred racing,” NYRA spokesman Dan Silver said.
