Most of the supplements and feeds I use to put weight on horses on the farm are high fat and low sugar. What do you use on the track to keep the same high immediate energy requirements and increase calorie intake?
My hard keeping TB's at home get ultium but their temperments definitely change with the feed change. They quickly become mellow and more laid back and I don't think that would be benificial on the track.
How do you put weight on a horse in race training?

I feed free choice hay, a good beet pulp based sweet feed, a ration balancer and BOSS. I don't have to worry about putting weight on with that feeding program. If a horse comes to me that is underweight the above takes care of it for me without anything additional. They may get more of it than a horse that is at its ideal weight already though.

What beat pulp based feed do you use? Almost all sweet feeds have moved away beat pulp due to last years cost/shortage. Even brands I used at home that were beat pulp based changed without notification to using by-products.

we don't have the $$ to feed commercial weight gain supplements, so we usually just go to the wal mart and buy a few gallons of corn oil and drizzle about 1/4 cup on their feed

What is BOSS? any thoughts for what to use on horses who get a little loose on beet pulp based feed?

BOSS is black oil sunflower seeds. They are a good source of fat and Omega acids. Lots of horses get loose on beet pulp, if its not out of control I don't worry about it. If it is out of control then find them a feed without beet pulp in it.
