I found this gorgeous hunt coat that I really want to get... perfect color, really nice brand, etc. The only thing is that it has four buttons! It's not a dressage coat; it's definitely a hunt coat.

Is this a huge no-no or is it acceptable in the ring?

i'm pretty sure you wont be penalized, as long as you're overall well-turned-out :) if the judge is counting the buttons on everyones jacket and comparing, then i think he's probably missing everyones round!

See them more in the jumper ring with their fancy collars in Grand Prix classes. I have seen a few in the hunter ring, though

I have seen a lot of the 4 button, euro style hunt coats with fancy collars in the hunter ring here in CA very classy

As long as it fits well, I'd bet no one will notice how many buttons it has. Just go out there and find all eight spots.

that your performance will ride on ONE button!!!

i think as long as you don't have a hot pink, crystal lined collar, not many people will notice. at first people might whisper behind your back "Ewwww. look at what Across Sicily is wearingg", but when you beat the pants off them, they will all run out and buy the same thing.

Might be because I'm British, but I don't get this at all. Why would it matter? Be clean, smart and ride well- that's what should matter. Honestly, who notices these things?

It matters because show hunters come from hunting tradition, and in hunting, regular members (w/o colors) of the field wear a 3-button hunt coat.

However, show hunters in so many other ways have lost their "roots", per se, that I highly doubt you wearing a 4-button coat will have any negative effect whatsoever as long as it LOOKS correct to the judge.

I believe you are in the leading edge of a trend.

This is what I meant. ;)

I doubt that any of the horses (and riders ;) ) have ever been hunting.

Teehee... personally I think they look great, but I also don't want my performance marked down because the judge is all atwitter about my coat :)

Thanks for replies all!

In the US, you would be surprised. There aren't many of us, at least in my area, but there are a few. In the Virginia area there are more folks who hunt and also show.

My young mare was just division champion (baby green) at a hunter jumper show (actually at 2 of them in the last month) and I whip in at two hunts (off of her), and have been hunting for 11 years.
Florida Foxhunter (who posts on the board) is a fieldmaster at Live Oak and she shows regularly, I believe she has shown at Devon if she didn't again this year.

Although I do often laugh that my mare is usually the only horse in our classes who actually has seen a foxhound, there are actually quite a few of us popping up at shows.

And I agree that I wish I rode well enough that I thought one button would be the tie breaker for me at a show LOL

Whoops, sorry- that should be Many, not any. My bad!

I love to hear about show horses who have another job on the side! (Or hunt horses that show on the side ;) )

A jumper that we have at our barn used to show in the upper level jumpers 5s and 6s and when he wasnt showing his owner would take him foxhunting.... I always thought that was really cool

now back to the jacket I do not think it would matter as now days more people are turning more "Euro".

Mine is the latter :)
we just show a bit in the off season to sharpen our skills, put a little polish on if you will, and for fun.
