View Full Version : Note to self: my appliances will not be placated by horse talk

So, I had a pizza in the oven and the timer dinged. It's the kind of timer that will ding 3 times, wait 30 seconds, and ding some more, in case you've forgotten or missed it the first time. I was busy in the living room when I heard the second set of dings, and called out in my most soothing-an-impatient-horse voice, "Hooooold on, I'm coming."

The minute the words left my mouth I realized that I was attempting to placate my oven as if it were a horse standing in the cross ties.

My soothing voice didn't faze it, but hitting the off button did.

I noticed myself doing that the other day, but at least mine wasn't an appliance. So my cat got bit on the head by the neighbors cat, cats mouths are nasty little things so sure enough abcess ensued. Vet said to hot pack it twice a day to break things up. So as cat is not a happy camper I said to him "eeeeeeeeeeaaaassssyyyy Tigger, just woahhhhhh". Turns out it doesn't have the same effect on cats as horses. Go figure!

I had to work really hard to stop hitting hubby on the bum with the back of my hand and telling him to "move over" when he was in the way :D. My little boy (he's 13 mons) bit me the other day and my hand was half-way to his face before I realised what I was doing and stoped!!! Was going to give him a little swat like I do with the ponies, but he just got a angry yelp instead.

I say "whoa" to my dogs when they're pulling me on a walk . . . They do seem to get the gist.

I am just as bad, I do the same in lab when a timer goes off. Even worse, my grad student is now doing the same, and she doesn't even HAVE a horse...

I tried to get the lawn mower in the shed yesterday by telling it to "Step up..step up!"

And whacking them doesn't "fix" anything like it does a horse!

I click to my dogs when I want them to move out of my way. And click to my truck and tell it to git when I'm accelerating.

nope, didn't impress Sneezer either when that happened. Polymycin did, though.

I caught myself clucking to my car when I tried to start it--before realizing the battery was dead.

My wife and I were holding hands walking through NY a while back. We approached a corner at which she wanted to turn and about three strides out she gave me a half-halt.

Been there, done that. My daughter had a habit when she was young to squeal and stomp or kick with her feet when heading towards a tantrum, and I too found myself instinctually raising my hand. When she started coming to the barn and learning about horse behavior and training, I pointed out that when the horses squealed and stomped/kicked, that a quick swat was usually in order, and that it was very hard for me to not swat her when she did it, and the funny part is - she stopped doing it after that.

And of course I say "whoa" to the dogs! They don't get it.

I'll yell "Quit!" at about anything that isn't "behaving". I especially want to yell at those credit card scanner things at check-out counters. When did that become my job?

Same here...I use my same discipline phrase with appliances and non-living things that I do with live things. Although mine is "Knock it off!" I yelled it at the vacuum the other day when it got stuck on something and I pulled it and it jumped forward and almost knocked me over.
A couple seconds later I hear my 16 year daughter call from her room, "And did the vacuum knock it off Mom?"
Yeah...laugh now rotten child, LOL!

I have an awful habit of clucking to people when they are walking fast enough in public places or down a sidewalk. And if my children are doing something they shouldn't be doing, I have a way of saying "Quit it" as if I was scolding my horse.

I find myself half-halting like mad when my hubby is driving :D

My dogs get "whoa", "QUIT!" and "stand" and they do them, no problem. "Move" gets the hubby and kids out of the way. I do cluck at the kids and I've been heard to yell, "whoa!" at them, too.

I have a habit of making this "Aah-aah" noise at my horses when they're getting ready to do (or already doing!) something inappropriate. I got a really weird and somewhat displeased look when I accidentally did it at a client at work one day :o

I'm just glad I'm not the only one to do this sort of thing!:lol:

I've been subject to some teasing from the fambly lately ... my folks were down to visit and we were all crowded into our small kitchen cooking dinner together. Dear ol' dad was in my way, so what did I do? Yup. Poked him in the ribs and clucked. Got this response: "Do I look like one of your damn horses, girl?! Whaddaya want?!":o:lol:

(In my defense, this was at the end of a veerrryy long week filled with veerryyy long days ...)

When the cats are out and I want them back inside I call for them the same way I do for the horses. My SO thinks I am crazy as do I am sure the whole neighbourhood, but the cats do come when called. Sometimes at their own pace, but the horses are no different in that respect.

When not driving the Tahoe, I cluck to my car or kiss to it when we're going up steep hills (it's a 4 cyl.) Then pat it on the steering wheel telling it what a good job it did :)

My dogs are basically all trained like horses - "step up" and hand signals/body language like you'd do with a horse.....they also eat large whole carrots ;)

We use Smart Balance margarine and just a few weeks ago in the morning, half asleep, I asked hubby for the Smart Pak... ;) True story.

My cats respond (as much as cats WILL) to "NO! NAUGHTY! STOP IT!" and know to get out of the way when I cluck.

I cluck at EVERYTHING, though, and sometimes take it a bit too far, I guess, without realizing it. My sister and I were in NYC a couple of weeks ago and an elevator door wasn't responding fast enough for me, so I said, "Come on!" and clucked to it. A few of the passengers gave me a funny look. I guess they were tourists, too.

I cluck at my dog (who seems to get it), and I've clucked at people.
I've also said woah to my dog, the stove when things boil over, my sister's jeep when she was teaching me to drive (she's a horse person too, and thought it was hilarious) and... the treadmill at the gym. Don't look at me like that- it took off!

When a bug lands on me, I either stomp my leg, or swish my pony tail.

When my sister took me to an empty parking lot and was teaching me the basics of driving, I got frustrated when the car wouldn't bend. For some reason, it wasn't listening to my inside leg...

Yeah - I push my seat forward to accelerate in my car. By the way the car doesnt bend either.

When my sister drives too fast its 'easy, EEEZZY' as my foot hits the imaginary brake on the passenger side. All my animals know 'staaay, wait' with a raised index finger. They all do it too, even the cats.

Once, I sat deep in my seat...but the car didn't stop. Fortunately I had enough time to hit the brake too

My sister & I were working in the yard, she had the yard cart and needed to go back and over so I started tapping it on the side and saying baaaack. She said it was hard to side pass with only two wheels:winkgrin:
all my critters and most of my family know 'load up'.
