so today some folks come in after hours to look at some hay....the cheapest hay in the barn...the hay we sell as damaged and no refund and we tell you up front all about it...well it is the hay they must have for their near term broodmare...
husband says "that's not mare hay" and goes into why it's not suitable or in some cases even safe as mare hay
the man then proceeds to tell him how broke he is and how he bought two horse trailers yesterday and blah blah blah...
he looks him right in the eye and says "Mister you need to feed a broodmare and if you can't feed her just do the kind thing and go home and put a bullet in her head"
:eek::eek::eek:
I about died...he goes out of his way to make sales and support people and sell them the right thing...he NEVER talks to people like that...but today he'd had enough I guess...
I'm still pretty stunned....and proud...just a little

Sad that someone like that is breeding. Unfortunately, there is a perfect example of how we end up with so many abused and neglected horses. If you can't afford to feed one correctly, breed another one in case you might just make a buck of the sale. ...swell.
I can understand your husband's frustration. ... idiot (breeder, not your husband!).

I think it was kind not to suggest another head for the bullet.

That is awesome! At least he had the guts to say what everyone else was thinking!
I seem to have the problem of not speaking up myself. Maybe they will reconsider the "need" for a new horse trailer versus the need for non-fescue hay for the pregnant mares.

You just know this foal will be totally healthy and then go on to breed his own mother in a year or so. Unfortunately they seem to thrive on neglect sometimes.
Give your husband an atta boy from me!

I'm going to trust that when your hubby says it's not good, it's really NOT, but I'll tell you my hay guy's WORST hay is better than most folks best. I always tell him, short of mold, I'll take his 'throwaway' and 'returns.'
And it's not that my standards are that low, it's that his are that high. Having said that, Good on ya to hubby. They obviously needed to hear that.

Good for your husband, though I wouldn't of said put a bullet in her, rather give her to me or find her a better home, something along those lines. Least he stood up to someone who was apparently ignorant in the care and nutritional needs of a brood mare. Pat on the back for him and a way to go!

Did he convince the guy to buy better hay? to sell one of his trailers? I still hope he did not take your husband's words literally... I feel so bad for the poor mare! I just hope the guy got the hint to feed her better...

Did he convince the guy to buy better hay? to sell one of his trailers? ...
the man said they did not have enough money for the better hay (the difference in the two was $20 for the amount he wanted) and he'd be back in the morning...and the woman wanted to know when we open up...I doubt they will come back...
we get scammed a lot by people wanting cheap near mulch hay to resell as "good Production Acres hay"...they ask for cheap and then it needs to be weed free mold free and fescue free...buddy come on who can't see thru that?? do we look that stupid ? really?
on the off chance that they really have a broodmare, we do not want to be known as the "farm that sold them that garbage"and times are tight and lord knows we need to sell hay...but it was a surreal thing to hear, I promise ;)

And I would say the same for Calvin's hay. He would not let me buy it if it weren't right for my horses, but, then, I'd LISTEN to him, so there would be no bullets involved ;).
I was over there a couple of weeks ago to get some new grass hay, and perhaps some alfalfa mix for my harder keeper. Calvin referred to the (already completed, mind you) hay analysis and explained why the more-expensive alf mix was no better than the less-expensive grass for what I needed (no broodmares, here). I came home with a full load of the grass hay, and a few extra $$ left in my pocket.
I cannot imagine Calvin spouting off to a customer unless he were truly at the end of his rope, but I'm proud of him for calling the guy on it, either way.

There's a real downside in dealing with honest men: they tend to tell the truth. ;)
So maybe this bozo should have only bought one horse trailer the day before? Then he could have bought appropriate hay?
We've got decent pasture right now, but we suppliment our lactating mares with some of Calvin's good alfalfa and the mares are holding weight nicely, even as they go back to work.
Proving, once again, that quality doesn't cost, it pays.

Tamara: plant a big ol' kiss on Calvin - he is one of the few, a dying breed, the honest Tradesman.
My DH was another, sometimes sacrificing business for ethical reasons.
I wouldn't have had it any other way..it's easier to sleep at night

Well done to hubby!
My husband came home one day this past winter, slammed the door and got on the phone. The next thing I hear is a tirade directed at an old friend named Joe. " Joe, what the hell are you doing?, Do not realize your horses look like sh** out in that bare field. Where the feck is the hay and what are you feeding them?"
Hubby had been driving home from getting feed and passed his place. I can tell you the next time he went by, things looked a bit different and he kept on driving by just in case. I'm not saying he needs to be a one man crusade, but it really ticks him off when people have the means and just can't do right by the horses.

He done good Tamara! Sometimes a person has to stand up for the horses who can't talk for themselves, you just can not take any more ignorant thinking!!
