So I recently purchased a Yearling and I want to either show On The Line at Warrenton this year. OR start preparing for the 2 yr Old . next year.
DO you guys recommend any supplements or any additives to his feed program. ? He is really growing alot now and is already 16hands !!! I went to Upperville and wow they are all so fat and slick and shiny.
Any suggestions would help .

I was toying with the idea of additives for my youngster when I was showing her on the line, but like all supplements, some people liked them, some people didn't see any effect, every horse is different :) So rather than spend the $ on an expensive supplement I just added corn oil, and did some nice hill work in-hand to get those muscles pretty. (Grain was Triple Crown Complete). I always try to avoid over-roundpenning the babies, and I don't like keeping them inside too much, so a good old fashioned work out did the trick. (I even lost some weight! haha)

Mine is and always has been large for his age, so I keep him on low amounts of grain and give him rice bran and corn oil to keep up the fat levels. The rice bran gives them gorgeous dapples and shiny coats

See I thought that. I am now on the phone with a friend who is a breeder and Handler.
She told me to : Add the following to get that condion & coat I want. with weight.
Corn Oil , Flax Seed ,and basic grooming and conditioning. Nothing more .
sounds easy enough . what you think?

I think, with babies, simple is always best. The flax seed or rice brain as an additive is a great idea. I've not ever fed either personally, so I'd suggest consulting the great minds here as to what amount would be best for your baby. I even bought a few different curries to see which my girl liked best, and the 2 geldings got the leftovers.. haha One product I SWEAR by is the Miracle Coat Horse Leave-in Conditioner/Lusterizer. It works great to encourage hair growth/regrowth, especially mane and tail. It smells like, well, just awesome. Lots of good vitamins, not tacky feeling, and not pricey!! They also make a great all natural fly spray. (I don't work for them, I promise, just love their stuff! Helped my baby look great.)

Ok . I have some pics and let me see how to do this . LOL.
Now I just got a PM. that I should only consider adding the following to his feeding program: Fat -cat , Grand Complete, & his normal Strongid C2X wormer. along with exercise and good hay .
Boy talk about getting lost in the dark here. LOL.
Pics to come.

it's the grooming and conditoning part that will be more than one hour a day...every day...dumping something in a feed bucket is nothing compared to
"well strapped every day";)

All of ours get Calf Manna.
Fat Cat is a GREAT supplement when you want to get weight on quickly.
Nothing takes the place of good hay.

My mother started giving it in the 1960's and we do to this day. Awesome product that builds weight, and adds a luster to the coat you've never seen.

I used Calf Manna years ago. Have forgotten how much you feed of it. As I remember it was not a whole lot. ??

No and it doesn't need to be.
It used to come with a small square cardboard box you folded to make a container. :)
No longer however..........
We have a small aluminum cup and start them out with 1/4 cup for about a week or so and increase to 1/2.
The broodmares (in foal and already foaled) get one cup once a day.

I always considered calf manna to be sort of the first ration balancer. It was used in horses to up the protein and vitamins and such of the feed they were getting in my experience. Now we have more equine specific products to chose from but there is nothing wrong with the tried and true.
