View Full Version : What is this?!

Ok, so I am not a breeder, don't really know much about it. I was on a tack store website and searched for "surcingle" because I want to start lunging my guy with side reins. I got back plenty of options, but I also got this:

What is that?! What is it used for? I tried to think of a few options, but was coming up blank. Not really trying to get any graphic answers here, just really wondering. The description didn't help a whole lot so I thought I would ask you breeders here on COTH. Is this something typically used in breeding?

It is, as the description says, a stud brush. It is used as an anti-masturbatory device. If the stallion gets an erection and begins masturbating, his penis comes into contact with the brush which of course, makes it rather uncomfortable. Barbaric devices, although that one is less so than some we've seen. The one we have that we use for display at our courses is actually made with nails :(.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Kathy, I can see how that device would "discourage" that type of behavior. (nails?! really?!)

Yup, nails. And when you consider that a normal, healthy stallion masturbates, on average, every 90 minutes, no wonder we end up with some stallions that become nasty and vicious. The interesting thing is that we typically see them used in the south, as in the deep south, sexually repressed south <smile>. They are actually relatively common in the Tennessee Walker industry, for example. The better educated breeding managers just hang them on the wall, but you still meet a few that think they are a necessary part of the breeding operation.
Hope that helps.

What is the thinking behind using such a device? Why would any one want to deter a stallion from masturbating?

Taking a wild guess here that the moron who designed that is male, I would like to strap one on him and let him walk around a crowded beach all day long. It never ceases to amaze me how the default approach to dealing with horses is one of brutality and ignorance.

The assumption (erroneous in most cases) is that if the stallion is masturbating, he must be ejaculating and therefore depleting his sperm reserves. Or...they just don't want to have to see it <rolling eyes>. Most healthy stallions masturbate...a LOT. But, it is the rare stallion that actually masturbates to ejaculation. Most will have some pre-ejaculate, but rarely semen.
Hope that helps!

Are you kidding me? Oy, the stupidity out there never ceases to amaze me!

Well, if masturbating makes humans go blind, just imagine what it does to stallions!  People believe some weird things...and have to control every last detail (or so they think).

Hey - dont laugh. I remember seeing some weird looking surcingle device on a colt at the track many years ago and I asked what in heaven's name that was being used for, and the groom turned quite red and said the colt "played with himself quite a bit" and as he was racing tomorrow, the trainer didnt want his strength depleted before the race, so he had to wear this thing 48 hours out from all of his races
That was before the Internet, so never did or could follow along to see if this colt actually WON on a consistent basis because any masturbatory tendencies were thwarted for 48 hours before each race ...

Well, for those of you who think the previous device was brutal, this is the one that we have on display at our short courses  When you consider that a healthy stallion masturbates every 90 minutes, by discouraging that behavior, it's no wonder we have frustrated, angry stallions that can and do develop aberrant behaviors..

What a great device to prevent them from masturbating AND permanently injure their penis!:no:
