I don't think he was THAT tired. He just didn't get a great trip, Dunkirk dug in, and Summer Bird was able to have a pretty easy run around.

Anyone thinking that Birdstone's stud fee is going to go up just a bit now? He's got sons showing some serious class.

Also...eh, I can't blame the rider for calling it, but I really don't htink they're going to set down Dunkirk. That's a reach.

3Dogs said TRIED, not TIRED.

He looked great, Calvin said he eased up a bit to early on Mine That Bird, oh well.

I wanted Mine That Bird and Calvin to win, but it was not in the cards. At least he always makes an exciting race, coming from the back like that.

I noticed Kent was riding Summer Bird in the tractor tracks in the strech...smart smart riding. I would have loved MTB and Calvin to win for sentimental reasons, but a class horse still won.

Ohhhh, I think the only question is how MUCH... Still curious, have 2 by the same sire ever been in the money together in the Belmont before?

Great race. fun to watch, lots of good stuff. That Dunkirk sure has a beautiful gallop. Elegant horse.

He sure is a gorgeous horse - re-watch the tape and see how long Dunkirk's stride is against the horse galloping beside/behind him - I think Charitable Man's who looks like his is galloping twice as fast.

Of course a big disappointment for us, but a race well run. Suzanne called me, they had just left Belmont and were heading back to the hotel, then back to Louisville on Sunday. Of course, Calvin was a bit disappointed, but he said he was glad he had a horse finish sound, and he gave it his all. Wonder how the race would have gone had the #1 and #2 horses run in all 3 races like MTB, instead of skipping the Preakness? It has been a whirlwind week for Calvin, Lisa, Suzanne and Mike! They are exhausted and ready to get home and focus on the next race!

What a great Triple Crown series. The best in years!

Let's hear it for The Birds and The Girl. :-)

I was at Gainesway a couple weeks ago, and they said their phone has been ringing off the hook!

It was a good race. I was rooting for Mine That Bird, but it just didn't work out for them today. But I can't complain too much - the chestnut won!

Denied, Dunkirk kept his second. I don't know, it looked like a very minor drift, not a major cutoff, but the jockey would have been remiss if he didn't say anything.

I thought I heard someone say it was a first to have two by the same sire in the top three? Birdstone is going to be a very busy horse. Especially if they don't jack up his fee too much--hm, spend it on Smarty Jones, Big Brown, or a horse who had a Derby winner who was 2nd and 3rd in the other two, and that third was behind another of his colts?

Mine That Bird showed he's got a ton of heart, really dug in there.

I can't fault Calvin the way some were on TV. It's a fine line - wear the horse out by fighting him when he wants to go, or risk letting him go a tad early?

Good race.

I wonder how many bet the "bird exacta" and were holding their breaths for the inquiry.

Hats off to Woolley, Borel, and MTB. Good sports, all of 'em. It's been a very enjoyable Triple Crown campaign.

Interesting question, I'd like to know, too.

When I went to see the Irish Derby in 2002, the top 3 (maybe even top 4, I'd have to root around and find my program) were all by Sadler's Wells.

I will not keep looking at Gainesway's web page. I will not keep trolling for-sale listings for mares. I will not keep doing hypo matings with said mares and Birdstone.

1985: Stephan's Odyssey and Chief's Crown, 2nd & 3rd respectively, both by Danzig.

tim is a really nice guy, my husband had him employeed as our forman for a little while. glad he got a chance to go out on his own after being with "daddy" cole norman for so long.

after seeing this horse make a nice move in the derby i had him pegged for my belmont horse.

way to go MTB and Summer Bird and a grand showing for "the little guy" stables in the TC this year

After the race, I ran to my computer to do a hypo mating with Birdstone on my one and only TB mare. It was a D :lol::lol:. Guess she and I won't be getting into racing.

I thought the race was awesome and I have to admit, I am very tired of the "if he didn't win, he aint' nothin'" mentality of the TB commentators - sometimes I wish they'd just shut up. I think it was wonderful that the other "Bird" won, I too wonder how much his stud fee just went up, and I think MTB is a fantastic horse for being 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the toughest races in the country. I hope he goes to the Breeder's Cup.

Question: No steroids this year, right?
