Is there a way to palpate a horse's throat and detect any scar tissue in the event they have had surgery to fix a paralyzed flap or any other fix for roaring?

Not that I know of. I had one mare that someone had really botched the job and you could tell something wasn't right, but generally, there's not a lot of scar tissue. I'd just scope it. It's not very expensive and you'll know exactly what you have.

no, just scope it, it will tell you right then and there if the surgery has been done. i work at a equine clinic and it is cheap to scope.

I had a horse for sale and at the PPE, the vet kept saying that he must have had throat surgery because she could feel his voice box. She said it numerous times. The horse never had any type of surgery. So scoping may be the way to go.

I ask because I knew of a horse that a vet palpated and insisted the horse had had surgery. The owner at the time said there was no way. Later, she did a little research and it turned out he'd had the surgery in Germany before he was imported.
