This adorable Section B Welsh colt was born to some clients on Friday. He is by *Wedderlie Mardi Gras (palomino) and out of a grey mare. (I don't know what color she was foaled, my copy of her papers is out in the office, and I haven't dug them out of the file.)

I THINK he's buckskin, but I'm just not sure -- he could also be bay. Definitely NOT NOT NOT grey. (Mostly I just can't believe that he doesn't have a blaze! He's in a SUPER SMALL percentage of Mardi babies that don't have blazes -- I think there's been only four or five EVER!)

Thoughts?

My gut feeling is that he's a buckskin but I'm not certain. Sure could be a bay too. I would not be so sure of gray not being possible. I've seen foals without a white hair on them at foaling gray later. DNA testing is your friend!

If he retains the dorsal stripe, he is a dun

It's not a dorsal stripe, it's countershading. Many foals are born with this and it either disappears totally, or fades to be less noticable. A dun's true dorsal stripe looks pretty different.

I'm voting buckskin too. Darling!

I will vote contrary and say Bay, because the color in the photos looks washed out so I'm thinking richer than in the pics.

You might look at the face and see if highlight reflected off the hair in bright sunlight are red-tone or yellow-tone. I had a 'pumpkin' bay filly that everyone swore was buckskin (wasn't, even without DNA, Mom regular bay, dad regular seal brown, no dilutes anywhere) but you could see all her highlights were red tone.

And not grey, looks like the lower legs are pale, while most greys I've seen will have color closer to adult on their lower legs/points.

Nice shoulder! He's a fancy boy!

Wait until he has shed out his winter coat in spring of 2010. Then you will know his true color.

Regardless of what his true color will be, he is very cute.

I think you are right -- the first shed is still going to be hard to tell what he really is. His owner might end up having to color test him to be sure.

I'm not sure, but he looks like a buckskin. One thing for sure is, is that he is very cute!
