I have been wondering how "normal" my horse's work schedule is. I'll answer in a separate post for Emma.
How many times a week is your horse ridden?
- Flat only?
- Jumping?
- "Just for fun" riding?
How long do you usually ride them at a time?
Do you show?
- If so, how is your show week schedule different than a non-show week?
- How?
Do you always ride your horse, or do others ride them?
- If others, who?
- Why?
Do you ride horses that aren't yours in an average week?
- How many?

How many times a week is your horse ridden? 5
- Flat only? 2
- Jumping? 3
- "Just for fun" riding? 3 - usually at the end of a lesson
How long do you usually ride them at a time? 60 minutes, then another little bit of riding around the farm.
Do you show? Yes
- If so, how is your show week schedule different than a non-show week? Somewhat.
- How? The last jumping lesson is usually much shorter than usual
Do you always ride your horse, or do others ride them? Others ride her, too
- If others, who? She gets used for little kids, too.
- Why? Because she packs them around so well, my trainer uses her sometimes.
Do you ride horses that aren't yours in an average week? Yes
- How many? It just depends. Sometimes none, sometimes lots. We all ride the trainer's lesson horses for tune ups, and I exercise for another trainer in town some, too.

How many times a week is your horse ridden? 5 or 6 times a week. His schedule is usually three days on, one day off.
- Flat only? 4 to 5 days
- Jumping? Once per week, unless horse-showing. No more than twice per week.
- "Just for fun" riding? At least one ride per week will be in a big open field or out trail riding in the woods (I counted that as flat riding) and we also do trot sets and gallop sets in the field, which he thinks is a lot of fun!
How long do you usually ride them at a time? My horse has a short attention span and a low level of flatwork tolerance (but mooooooooom, it's so haaaaaaard.) He does better if I expect more out of him in a short period of time--say, 30 to 45 minutes. Jumping lessons are around 1 hour. Trail rides can take much longer.
Do you show? Yes, but usually only weekend shows. It's rare that we ship out and keep stalls somewhere.
- If so, how is your show week schedule different than a non-show week? If I show twice in a weekend I don't jump at all during the week and arrange his schedule so that he has a day off before the first show and a hand-walk or light trail ride after the second day. If I am showing once I try to keep the jumps a little lower during the week.
Do you always ride your horse, or do others ride them? My sister's horse is currently out with a suspensory injury, and so one of her weekly lessons is on my horse. I count it as a light flatwork day for him. Normally, I'm his only rider, unless I ask my trainer if she could hop up on him to demonstrate something for me when something isn't clicking in my head.
Do you ride horses that aren't yours in an average week? If my trainer has a horse that needs exercise, I might.

How many times a week is your horse ridden? What's the weather like? Anything from 0-5, depending on the conditions as we ride outdoors on grass.
- Flat only? preferrably 2
- Jumping? preferrably 3, but 1-2 of those may be very short jumping sessions added to a flat or fun ride: work on 1 line or 1 turn half a dozen times at no more than 2'6
- "Just for fun" riding? often, incorporated into the above rides - we're already out in a field; easy to turn off into the woods if it's hot, or go ride the fence line.
How long do you usually ride them at a time? 30-60 minutes
Do you show? Yes. When he's not lame. Pity Party happening here right now; TWO local shows this weekend to choose from & couldn't go to either. Got new bar shoes Tuesday. Stepped on his own heel Wednesday & pulled one off; didn't discover it until Thursday. Farrier put it back on (and trimmed those back toes a bit more!) but he'd strained something in the front leg when he pulled the shoe off; not dead lame but not quite right and I didn't want to risk it. He'll be fine with (another) week off.
- If so, how is your show week schedule different than a non-show week?
- How? We try to trailer over to the trainer's barn for a lesson sometime during the week before the show. Shows tend to be one day, on a weekend.
Do you always ride your horse, or do others ride them? Others too.
- If others, who? DH or DD. Or when a horsey friend comes to visit.
- Why? DH or DD: if the weather is good and I can't get home to ride, like if I'm traveling for work. Friends: he's a fun ride and pretty uncomplicated
Do you ride horses that aren't yours in an average week? Yes
- How many? Might ride DH's or DD's as we have them all at home. Unless we are trailering in, once a week I will take a lesson at trainer's barn on one of trainer's horses. In the past I have sometimes helped out someone who boards with trainer by riding on of theirs 2-3 times/week.
