View Full Version : Full Seat breeches?

I have run across a deal on a pair of breeches, but they're full seat. I've never ridden in full seats. Just how different are they? Are they any less comfortable or hotter than knee patch? They would be for schooling only.

I personally don't like them but everyone else I talk to seems to disagree. I don't jump in them because they're too sticky and makes it harder to get out of the saddle like you need to. They're definitely hotter than knee patch breeches. They make 'cooler' full seats, but I haven't tried them.

I've had one pair (a cheapie pair of On Course full seats), but never liked them. The seat felt stiff and I actually didn't like being "stuck" to my saddle. I can understand why dressage riders like them and if I was riding greenies or other "special" ones, I might actually prefer the extra grip, but for everyday schooling, I much prefer knee patch breeches. However, I'm just one person and I haven't owned a nice pair of full seats, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Thanks! The ones I saw were On Course, in the pretty smoky blue. However, I'm thinking they wouldn't be a bargain if I didn't love them. With summer here, too, I think the sweat factor would be a deal breaker, too.

I love them. Love! I rode at a show in my TS knee patches breeches today, and it felt so weird. I felt like I was slipping all over the place at first. The full seats seem to give me just a little more control in making finite adjustments. I have some of the on course. They're ok, but they aren't my favorite. They probably are slightly hotter than knee patches, but not all full seats are. I love my f.i.t.s.

I don't like them for jumping, but they can be quite comfy for flatwork

This is why I personally would not buy a pair of full-seats (unless maybe I wanted extra grip to ride a greenie or something). I feel like it would be easy to become dependent on the extra grip, and I would have trouble transitioning to my TSs for the show ring. I've never owned/ridden in a pair of Full Seats, so I could be wrong, but that has always been my impression of them.

The ony truely cool full seats are the ones from Ovation. They have a Dri-Lex inner lining which absorbs and wicks sweat. I saw a testimonal on a website that a dressage rider who always ended up with hot sweaty full seats was totally dry and comfortable after wearing them.. Their synthetic full seats by the way are the new stretch fabric that adds a lot to comfort.

I love my full seats. They're very big on the A/AA hunter circuit right now. The pikeur and tailored sportsman full seat breeches are no different that the regular show breeches. I find the pikeurs more comfortable as well as cooler, actually.

Ugh...does that mean judges are going to start not looking at riders in knee patch breeches? Since a lot of them seem to follow the trends....(not all, GOOD judges watch the ride, not the brands or trends. But you get what I'm saying)

I don't like them. I much prefer my knee patch breeches. I feel like I just get very stuck in my saddle and can't move. I've never had a problem with heat in them, but they just aren't what I prefer.

WRONG!

Euroseats are trendy. NOT fullseats.

sorry i wasn't thinking along the lines of fullseats and euro seats, i'm just used to calling the euroseats fullseats so they're kind of stuck like that.

Cheap fullseats are horrible... if you're going to buy some, spring for the pikeurs, cavallos etc. They're not nearly as sweaty to wear as the cheap ones! I jump in mine all the time, but I also don't buy the super sticky type.

I love the Euroseat KP breeches - for me they're much more comfy and flattering.

My a** is already big, but as an older lady who doesn't bounce any longer, I like the little extra stick they give(especially in the winter). I guess I am just used to them as I don't think they are any hotter than knee patch.

Sneaking in from the dressage forum . . .

FITS aka "monkey butt" or "baboon butt" breeches are the best full seats, IMO. They are deerskin and are ventilated. The pair I have are no hotter than my regular knee patch. The butt area is divided so you have a LOT more room to move and I don't feel constrained in any way in these things.

I rotate my breeches from knee patch to full seat, depending on how much "stick" I feel I need for that day, and I find myself wearing the FITS a lot.

They don't look too bad on my huge butt, either. I thought they would 'cause my "nice ass" days have been over for a LONG time :D

YES, they are rather expensive. Expect to pay over $200 unless you find them on sale. Well worth it though, IMO.

Eileen

PS
If you go into a place like Dover to try them, don't call them "monkey butts" . Either those girls don't seem to have much of a sense of humor or they've been told not to encourage that nick name :D

I don't like the leather full seats but love the Kerrits grip-tek for schooling. Yes, they are hotter than knee patch, but if you have a big youngster with a spook in him, they are great. I don't find I have more trouble getting out of the saddle to jump in these (though I do with leather full seats), but I'm used to them.

The Kerrits grip-tek and sticky spray on my boots have kept me off the ground more than once when goofus decided the cows next door were in the wrong place and therefore a dire threat to his immediate safety. :D

I just purchased my first pair of full seats and agree with others, they add a little extra stick on my young horse so is just starting under saddle. I haven't noticed them being any hotter, but then we haven't had much hot weather yet here in OR.

The pair I purchased are by Gersemi (http://www.gersemi.se/?id=3117&pid=3118) and the fabric is amazing. So comfortable across the knees and waist and much more freedom of movement than TS. I also appreciate that they are very long - even with the longs, I am used to the TS velcro being hitting the upper third of my calf.

The Gersemi breech does come in knee patch as well.

Just a note that the FITS breeches I posted about are worn by quite a few eventers -- Laine Ashker, Kim Severson, Corinne Ashton, Sara Mittleider, and Amy Tryon -- that are listed on the FITS web site.

Yes, this is a h/j forum, but they have to do stadium as well as xcountry.

Just thought I'd add that.
