View Full Version : "I forgot my socks!.. and flyspray! and boot stick!" an ode to the mobile tack store

After the last three weeks of realizing all the things I didn't have - where is my Sleazy? my really super nice hunter crop? - and discovering things my horses destroyed - fly sheets, standing wraps - and finally coming to the realization that while I adore the Farm House, they can indeed make mistakes that I cannot live with (a full calf on the tall boots ordered for my chicken legs... yes, I tried to "make it work" and it wasn't going to happen - you could fit an infant in those boots with my leg), I also realized what wonderful, wonderful things mobile tack stores are.
Jim at Foxcreek and Mandy at Equine Oasis spent so much time finding random things for me and debating the merits of the $49 flysheet v. the $90 one, and helping me to try to convince my mom that I really did need a new show coat (we lost that battle) and finding a pair of in-stock Sergio Grasso boots that fit like a glove. I absolutely love, love, love these guys and probably couldn't horse show without them and their wonderful selection of things.
So how about a shout out to our favorite mobile tack stores (or tack stores in general?), for being enablers and helping us choose the correct fly sheet for our destructive animals? ;)

Champion Saddlery- they know my name.
I can often be found there with dirt on my butt buying a new bit. Or spurs. Or helmet.

Equi-Venture Tack & Apparel. Tom's eyes go cha-ching when he realizes I'm at a show :D. This weekend, I'm hoping to resist the urge for new clothes/helmet/bits.
Yes, I love to just go and fondle the bridles, coats, bits, etc., but I do end up giving them a blank check and that is always dangerous - especially when DD figures out I've done that! 7 year olds can learn fast!

At Garden State, this wasn't technically a tack shop, but one of the vendors, it was called Biba, and it had THE CUTEST CLOTHES. I spent an ungodly amount of money there, and walked out with two large full bags and a big smile on my face. The lady who owns/runs it figured out she'd already roped me in when I kept adding things to the pile of stuff to try on. I had a bunch of fun. Didn't even notice how much money I spent til it was too late. Oops! :D I hope she doesn't go to too many shows around here (which she probably does, because her main store is on long island) because her gorgeous clothes will eat up all of my money!!! :D

The Shaw's-mobile in NorCal! Although I believe Shaw's is going/has gone out of business :( I absolutely adore both their actual stores and the mobile ones at shows, and have found their selections to be very wide and their salespeople very helpful.

Me too!!! Love Tom and Duffy:) He has my mom's credit card number haha I feel like I am constantly there at horse shows buying something.
In Colorado this year I also met Jennifer and TJ from Horse Trends and I love that place. They are so nice and helpful, slightly cheaper than most tack stores, and they have such a huge selection!

Gotta love Duffy, too. I love how he lays in the doorway so you have to step over him.
ETA - we have a mom who makes beautiful equestrian jewelry (lots of hand cut and hammered silver, lovely beading, etc.) and she sells it at shows. I love having shopping in our barn!

I love Equi-venture too! Tom told us he might start up a website, which would be cool. Still, since we don't really have any major tack hope here any more, it is amazing to actually look & touch & try on w/o shipping back & forth. He's so good at knowing exactly what you want.

Farmhouse. Lord knows they've saved me and my last horse a gazillion times. Most notably when I'd lost 25 pounds and got to the first winter show of the year to realize NONE of my current show clothes fit and had to buy new show clothes. They were wonderful in helping me find what I wanted and what was in my price range.
There is one other mobile tackstore whose name is escaping me, but they do a fantastic job with monograms and they also carried the most stunning RJ classic coats and cut me a deal on a stunning French Blue coat as well as monogramming a collar of mine in record time so I could get in the ring.

Outdoor Outfitters is the best in So. Cal. The seem to have everything that I forget and then some. Their prices are great and they do not try and gouge you at the horse show. They have some terrific sales on closeouts and last years stuff. They also let trainers have a show account. The owners are terrific people also.

I saw Tom this weekend in KC, and told him about this thread. He was tickled.

Bahr's saddlery in Ontario has always been such a big help. As a new horse owner I was full of questions (and still am) about certain items that I need to buy, how to use certain products etc. They have answered every questions and gone above and beyond always helping out. So thanks to all the staff at Bahr's you are all fabulous!
