I have about 7 or more different coats, and I can never decide which to wear (except for when I do the Eq). :D So.......

What division do you show in and what color coat do you wear?

And what sways your decision to wear that one?

For a while I had 6+ coats, so I also had a tough time deciding.
Since I fancy myself a true HP, I would schedule each show shirt "1x" per summer (we only have 6 shows). Then arrange matching coats.

I usually went with a navy jacket for the eq, with a coordinating shirt. Then usually another dark coat for open/schooling hunters, and a light coat in the AA's.

When I did all jumpers, I just sort of picked randomly (I always wear a coat in jumpers- looks better in pictures :) )

Currently I'm on a Navy Coat w/ white shirt kick. Every show. Its just classy. I'm into classy this year :)

I have a black coat that I bought way back in the day when I first started showing because it was only $40, I use it as a back up and sometimes in the winter because it's so warm. My main show coat is a really pretty, dark gray color with pink and purple pinstripes and magenta lining.

I love coats, and I love a sale! Therefore, I have WAY too many coats.

Navy and a tone-on-tone white for eq, but I liked to wear different stuff for the other days:

I have a few different olive-toned coats that I thought looked great with my chestnut, so one day I always wore one of them. I usually wore some version of a peach toned shirt under those jackets. On the hack day I liked to wear a light brown coat I had -- it was a little bold, but I tried to draw attention to my horse during the hack. He usually pinned well O/F, so I tried to just get the judge to notice him in the U/S. He wasn't flashy enough on the flat to draw a lot of attention, but if the judge saw us and remembered us from the O/F classes, we usually got a ribbon.

I also had a darker brown and a grey that I tossed in the mix. The dark brown coat had a butter yellow shirt, and the light brown and the grey coats went with a pink or light blue shirt. And a shad, of course...

I think I need an intervention.

Just today this subject came up. Earlier I told my mother, upon receipt of a small bonus, that I know just what to do with my unexpected windfall. She said, "Oh good, what are you going to buy?"

I actually blushed, stammered, then said, "Well, um, you know. I, uh... Well, I have a riding-clothes problem but I can stop anytime I want. Seriously. I mean... It's not like I was going to buy another hunt coat!"

I was seriously embarrassed because in that moment I realized that pretty much all I ever want to buy is riding clothes. And mainly hunt coats.

But you know what's great - I only have five! Apparently my addiction is relatively mild!

My next post will cover hunt coats and when I wear them.

Okay, now that I'm done with my own intervention story, I will answer the OP's question.

The way I decide what hunt coat to wear is:

First, practical: lightweight for summer, waterproof or less attractive older coat for bad weather, etc.

Second, based on the horse I'm riding: plain navy herringbone for the flashy paint, no light gray coats on the gray horse, etc.

Third, based on how I feel that day. This can override practicality considerations. I mean, sometimes, despite its impracticality, I want to wear a particular coat just because I feel like wearing it; "I really want to wear pink today but the pink shirt looks best with the brown windowpane coat. That's really too heavy for summer but what the heck, I'll sweat a little more - today is a pink day!" Fashion over function after all! :D

Because I'm always trying to help a fellow addict, I'd definitely recommend staying away from the Farmhouse End-Of-Year sale in the fall where I got 4 hunt coats @ $100-150 each (Grand Prix and Marigold) and Essex/Marigold shirts for $25 each. I repeat, stay away. (Says she who had to sell them because the DD's just won't fit in a 12R anymore...)

I have two show coats and they are both Navy. The older one is a little lighter and shinier thatn the other. This one gets quite warm. My new one is a dark plain navy coat that is lighter weight. I think that I will be wearing my new coat for most/all of the summer shows coming up.

Currently I have a black TS and some knock off navy jacket.

Neither fit :) So I will need to revamp my wardrobe. I'll be looking for a green jacket, and I'd love a nice gray also.

I just got my first coat last year for IHSA. I wasn't crazy about it when I first got it (got talked into it by best friend at tent sale), but now I'm in love. Dark charcoal grey with subtle pink and lavender stripes (sounds like roanypony's, only a kind of slate lining). Now I just need to muster up the money for a lavender or pink shirt that matches it better!

I am a wanna-be jacket addict. Unfortunately, I've got boobies and long arms, so can't find them that fit me very often. So, until I run across a sale on my size (yeah, right!) I'm stuck with the basic navy pinstripe that I got when first getting back into riding - after trying on dozens of jackets. I do have several shirts to change the look up some.

What I want when I save my pennies enough to get one made to encase the girls? Charcoal (as in almost black it's so dark) and a nice navy with pretty windowpane (I do like to do eq, so need navy - I'm an old-fashioned girl). Someday, I may get a chocolate, but since Mare is black, I'm thinking it wouldn't look great on her.

I am built much the same way. Grand Prix has an "Endowed" line that I like very much. Very good for the girls.

Another riding clothes junkie here ;)

I have two sets of coats/shirts. In the winter, when my black horse is actually *black,* I wear mostly my charcoal and lighter grey coats. I have one rather dark charcoal GP that has a medium blue and cream overplaid that I can wear with a bunch of different shirts, so it gets a lot of use. It is also the "Extreme Stretch" model which I find really comfortable, and it fits decently even with an Underarmour layer beneath the shirt for those chilly winter days. I have the same coat in a navy with a medium blue and cranberry overplaid that I will wear if we are doing a lot of Eq or classics, and a couple in lighter greys that are nice if we are doing more hunter stuff, or if I just get bored with the others.

In spring/summer, my horse tends to become sort of a nice seal brown color. That gives me a lot more options for coats, and I have a variety of tans, browns, taupes and olive ones in addition to the standard navy & grey. I also have a stunning french blue one that is actually my favorite, but it's really more of a jumper coat so I don't get to wear it often. My favorite for the hunters is a light tan/taupe with cranberry and cream plaid. I wear it with a really pretty cream linen shirt for bigger classes. It stands out a bit, but in a conservative way. Again if we are doing a lot of Eq, I will most likely choose one of my navy coats; I have a couple of lighter weight blue GPs that have subtle patterns to them so that there is still some "interest" to them while they still present a conservative, appropriate appearance for the that ring.

All told I have about 15-20 coats, way too many... I refuse to count the shirts. I know, it's a problem.

I tried a used one on that someone had at a show, but the arms had been shortened too much. Other than that, it fit me well. Where do you find their endowed line? Or do you just have to order them?

I have two show coats. The show coat that I mainly show in is a olivey grey RJ Classic, its really pretty. My other coat is navy. I show in both hunters and equitation and I mainly where the olivey grey coat because I like it better.

I have one with unaltered sleeves and it's pretty perfect. I could let it down if I wanted (there is enough material on the GP coats) but it's pretty good the way it is. I have monkey arms.

I found the ones I have in the dover clearance. You know when they have their "Dover line" or whatever where they have less-interesting colors (mostly greys and blues and blacks) for $199.

If I were to try and find another one I would probably call Farmhouse and ask them to help me!
