Depends on who you ask.

But, generally, one who is an excellent mover, very appealing looks, top dollar kind of horse.

I consider a fancy horse to have very high quality movement, no amount of elbow grease can hide a poor mover. They also have to have that pazazz, that little bit extra that makes them stand out.

Ohh.. ok. And what is a "handy" horse? One who is athletic and agile? Very responsive? Just want to clarify, thanks!

"Fancy" I'd say refers to what a horse can do: jumping style, movement, looks. However, plenty of fancy horses are nutcases or can't make it across the big oxers or are just constantly tense and irritated. It's not what makes a hunter, just one part of the package.

"Handy" is more with rideability and mind. A handy horse has that fifth leg that the eventers like, they can generally manage to jump a fence from just about anywhere even if no one knows how exactly it occured, and they can make tight turns and adjust well.

hhaha I like TheOrangeOne's definition of handy....my horse saved my arse so many times I don't have enough fingers and toes to count! And yes, fences that made me and others wonder...how did we not end up in a heap on the landing side?!?! Also what made me a fantastic hunter AND event horse!

What is it now, or what should it be? A lovely mover/jumper that clocks around like a metronome robot, or a lovely mover/jumper that may show some character by jumping out of its skin at a jump or playing a bit in the corner after a particularly lovely line.

In sale ads around here, "fancy" just means pretty. Or with spots. Or both. (:

A fancy horse is the type that makes you stop and look. You actually want to watch him in the ring because you expect him to be pretty good! Good looks, good movement and a good jump all rolled into one.

And most of them seem to know it - the horse will have a "look at me, I am IT" way about them -

You will know fancy when you see it - its written all over them!

To me, the ulitmate definition of 'fancy' is a combination of presence (attitude), looks, and ability.

I have an almost fancy horse. He's got presence, he's got looks but he's a little lacking in jumping form. He's jumps just fine...but he's not WOW. And while he's a nice mover, he's not top quality. So he's only sort-of fancy.

Fancy means the horse has a lot of natural grace and elegance; you can't train it into them, they are either born with it or not. It's an ease and fluidity of movement, combined with a refined look.
