Hi

Could anyone recommend some books to read up on about Hunter/Jumper, etc.

I have some dressage books that were a good read- one was like my bible!

FIC (who is a dressage rider slowly converting to hunter/jumper :D )

Hunt Seat Equitation by George Morris is the bible for all hunter/eq riders!

I also like Geoff Teall on Riding Hunters, Jumpers, and Equitation, and The Judge Is Back by Randy Roy.

I posted about this a while ago and got some great suggestions. I bought a lot of them but haven't gotten a change to read them. Darn finals :(

Here's what I've gotten so far:
Judging Hunters and Hunter Seat Equitation (Anna Jane White-Mullin)- One of my new favorite books. Wonderful explanations. Great Pictures. Clarifies a lot (even conformation stuff).

Hunter Seat Equitation (George Morris) Often referred to as "the bible" so there you go.
Because Very Round Counts (GM)- Haven't gotten into it. But it's by GM so I can't see it being bad.

The Power to Win (Laura Boynton King)- Bought but not read. The review on the thread sounded to good to pass up.

A Sport Psychology Workbook for Riders (Ann S. Reily)- It's exactly that- a workbook. Talks a lot about attitude, competitiveness, motivation, concentration, etc. Then asks you to journal the answers to questions. Once again, haven't read, but I plan on using this myself as well as for my college team next year.

Grooming to Win (Susan E. Harris)- Exactly what it says.

Build Confidence Over Fences (Holly Hugo-Vidal)- More of a book full of exercises than a reading book, but has great exercises from lunge line to flat work to courses.

Common Sense Horsemanship (Vladimir S Littauer)- Big and Old. Aren't those always the best? I haven't gotten into it, but if you're willing to put in the time for the nearly 400 packed full pages, I think it will be worth it.

Practical Horseman's Book of Horsekeeping (M.A. Stroneridge)- OMG I can't wait to get reading this! The table of contents is 7 pages long and it covers everything about horses from feed to tack to conformation to vices. I'm very excited!

101 Jumping Exercises for Horse & Rider (Linda Allen)- Once again, more of a book of exercises than a reading book. But has great grids and exercises to set up from very basic walk/trot stuff to advanced courses including ditches, etc.

I hope this helps! Good luck! :D

Aside from George Morris' book, which everyone will recommend, I would suggest both of Anna Jane White Mullin's books, they are great, also William Steinkraus' Reflections on Riding and Jumping. I have Geoff Teall's book too, which is supposed to be very good, I just haven't had a chance to read it yet.

Hunter Seat Equitation by George Morris aka the Bible

Geoff Teall's Riding Hunters, Jumpers, and Equitation is excellent.

Anne Kursinski's Riding and Jumping Clinic

Grooming to Win by Susan E. Harris

Judging Hunters and Hunter Seat Equitation by Anna Jane White-Mullin

Dressage with Kyra by Kyra Kyrklund

Have all of these and they are amazing. I save my Practical Horseman's magazines as well to brush up on interesting articles.

HUNTER SEAT EQUITATION!!!!! Love that book!

Also, Judging Hunters and Hunter Seat Equitation is also good. I forgot who it was who wrote it but I think someone else already posted it.

I like this one quite a bit. It's by Anna Jane White Mullin. She also has one on judging and showing, but I prefer this one for riding.

Posting an update- or reviews really- I've finished some and have started some...

Centered Riding - both editions- Sally Swift- had this book for years- love it! The visualization, diagrams, etc its VERY helpful... I go back often and re-read it or at least look at the diagrams....

Hunter Seat Equitation- by George Morris- aka the bible- not quite done with this book but I am learning *LOTS*

Grooming to Win by Susan E. Harris- excellent book- I didn't think it would be worth it but it truly is a fantastic read....

Judging Hunters and Hunter Seat Equitation by Anna Jane White-Mullin- Not quite finished with this book (I have several books going at the same time ) but I do find it very helpful and its really interesting. This book as more pictures than the Hunter Seat Equitation so a bit more enjoyable if you really like pictures....

Because Very Round Counts (George Morris) - Its a very interesting read- not technical but an enjoyable "pleasure" read. There was a few sections that I learned lots about (because it made sense) but a lot of it was a great historical reference reading of how things were back then...

Build Confidence Over Fences -Holly Hugo-Vidal- It is more of an exercise book as the other poster said- but I enjoyed this book a great deal... Not perfect for the jumper who has been jumping all their lives (I would think) as they may find it too basic but for someone like me who is getting back into it AND never has really jumped steadily (just for fun)... I found it useful and don't regret this purchase one bit.

101 Jumping Exercises for Horse & Rider -Linda Allen- A good book, its not all jumping exercises, there are some trotting grids... They look basic but my goodness- they are quite difficult to do undersaddle... A good buy.

That Winning Feeling- by Jane Savoie- it was on my list before- and have been meaning to buy it but never got around to it- its a good read as well- I'd keep it on my book shelf for sure...

Not sure where I read about this book but I found it used on-line- not sure how rare they are but I'm in the middle of reading it as well and can't put it down...

Practical Horseman's Book of Riding, Training, and Showing - M. A Stoneridge- Its got a bit of everything- Good pictures (althought not a lot compared to some books but its enough for this book- make sense? ) It is an older book, not in print but if you google or what not - you can probably find it somewhere. Lots of top riders contributed to the book - they all have a part in the book. I am sure some parts are outdated or not in practice anymore but there are a few other interesting details.

Still on my list (LOVE to read books!):
Geoff Teall's Riding Hunters, Jumpers, and Equitation
Anne Kursinski's Riding and Jumping Clinic
Practical Horseman's Book of Horsekeeping (M.A. Stroneridge)- (simply because I am enjoying the other book!)

I'll probably add more books to my collection when I get bored again...

Kinda off topic but good horsey read:

A Sunday Horse- Vicky Moon- I was *very* shocked but a lot of sections. It was like reading a gossip novel- Giggled at some parts. Its a fun horsey read- it was a perfect beach read which is exactly what I did with this book...

Forward Motion by Holly Meniro (sp?)- A cute horsey read, I enjoyed it but might not be everyone's cup of tea. Would have liked more stories but will take what I can get.

I think you have to include The De Nemethy Method by Bertalan Nemethy since most of the authors books listed were students of his or were greatly impacted by his teachings.

A Sunday Horse is one of my favorites!
Another good one in similar vein is "National to National" by David Hollis

I think Anna Jane White-Mullin must have THREE now--the one you linked, Judging Hunters and Hunter Seat Equitation, and this one:

Yes, Anna Jane White-Mullin published her third book, I think it was last year, fairly recently anyway. The Chronicle reviewed her most recent book not too long ago.

Thanks! I know her books are very popular--they always end up on these kinds of "must-have" book lists!

A friend and I continuously scavenge the used book stores for horse books, and occasionally come up with some great finds. Here are a few that I'm reading right now:

Understanding Equitation by Jean Saint-Ford Paillard
The Way to Perfect Horsemanship by Udo Burger

I'm also working my way through Philippe Karl's latest: Twisted Truths of Modern Horsemanship. Very technical, but very interesting.
