Spin off from Tiffany's thread :) Has your trainer/coach backed out of a lesson with barely any notice or at all and what was the reason?
Here's my story:
One of my former coach always backed out due to some emotional crisis. Some made sense, some was a bit over the top.
One day- I was due to have a lesson and she came down from her apartment with tears in her eyes- while I was warming up the horse for the lesson.
She proceeds to tell me she can't teach me because her friend went home that day.....
I would totally understand if the coach was a 12 year old girl (okay I probably offended some 12 year old girls but its just an example! I swear! ) (I was in my 20s then) but this coach was a grown married woman with three teens!
Needless to say I only last 3 months....

bahaha! Thats pretty crazy. I wouldn't have last long either, I hate emotional drama queens.
I've only had one incident where a trainer flaked...it was my first lesson at the barn, I had arranged it like 2 weeks in advance. I got all dressed, started heading that way (its about 40 minutes away) and get the call "oh, you have a lesson today? Sorry, I got my dates confused I'm actually at a horse show right now" DOH!!!

I've had a trainer cancel because he was out of his "smokes" and going to the gas station was top priority...
I've also had an instructor text message me and tell me that it "wasn't gonna work out"... As in they didn't wanna teach me anymore. I mean really a text message? Come on! Its really sad that a 30 something year old breaks off a lesson program via text message... How high school is that?

I had a very awkward cancellation once. I saw them leaving, luckily for me, and hacked that day, but there was no note, no phone messages, no answer for the other members of the lesson, and I hadn't been given any explanation to pass on, so my hack was spent listening to two rather upset people, who had come for a lesson and all I could say was "Well, I saw her leaving and she said to hack so and so and . . . ."
She needed my first trainer's assistant in the worst way. That one used to call me and tell me they had openings on such and such a day, did I want to add a ride? Ka-ching!

1. My instructor cancelled a lesson because.............she was in a bad mood and didn't feel like dealing with anyone.
2. My instructor cancelled a lesson because.............her clothes weren't dry in her dryer yet.
3. My instructor cancelled a lesson because...........she had moved all of her horses and gear in the middle of the night, stiffed the barn owner for back board and fees, and moved without leaving notification to anyone.
4. My instructor cancelled a lesson because...........she felt "fat" in her breeches.
(None of the above persons are my instructor anymore).

I have had trainers change or cancel lessons. Some last minute, some days in advance. I guess it either doesn't happen very often or doesn't bug me too much cause I have been known to bail as well (stuck at work, ill horse, etc...).
I suppose if a trainer was always cancelling my lesson with really weak reasons I would take the hint & change barns. Why stay where you aren't wanted?

Mine cancelled A LOT.....
One was because she had to clean her bathroom after giving her dog a bath....she lives on the property.
I think that was the best one!

I had a trainer I adored, but it was always SOMETHING. I would get the call after I had already been on and warming up for 30-45 minutes...wondering where the heck she was. For awhile I was very forgiving due to a personal crisis she had...but after awhile I felt like my ease in forgiving her just wound up being taken advantage of....I finally just told her I needed someone more dependable. We're still friendly today.

I've been lucky, I have folks that I ride with that when I call and say "hey I am in your neighborhood with the horse can I get a lesson in an hour?" they drop what they're doing (one of them look a long lunch from regular job) to meet me.
lucky! :-D

My former trainer canceled a lesson once because azeventer BROKE HER COLLARBONE and our trainer took her to the hospital.
This woman never takes anyone to the hospital (not that her place is littered with the broken bodies of her riders )
That was years ago, and we still tease azeventer about it.
Of course she likes you best! She took you to the hospital, didn't she??

How about one that I wish had cancelled?
I showed up for my prepaid, private flat lesson and was put into a group jumping lesson with a different instructor.
It was the last lesson in a package and I wasn't planning on reupping, plus that once a week lesson was the only chance I got to ride at the time, so I just went with it.

My trainer delayed a lesson once because she had to rush out to get fresh basil for supper. LOL I forgave her because a) I knew she was an obsessive cook, b) I was a few minutes late myself and c) I'd probably get invited for dinner after ;) But I still laugh over it. ;)

Instructor was "looking at" hay. Not buying, looking at.
Instructor was doing some spring cleaning.
Instructor was flooded in at the house & couldnt get out.
Instructor had a dead horse in the arena & didnt want people see. (better than the alternatve I guess)

I cancelled one because....
there was a 9 foot alligator in the driveway and I had to "keep an eye on it" until proper measures could be taken.

I've only had one trainer cancel on me, and he did it to all of us, a lot of times.
Needed cigarettes, watching basketball game, extracurricular activities with the BM:eek:

A trainer I rode with for many years accidentally stood me up once. I had scheduled an early morning Sunday lesson - like 8 am or something. My trainer was never at the barn that early on a Sunday, but she had said it was okay to lesson at that time. The day before I reminded her twice about the 8 am lesson.
8 am came and went, no trainer. She totally forgot.
Worked out okay though, a few months later I was at the barn, putzing around, taking my time grooming my horse, when my trainer came in and said, "Why aren't you on yet???!!!" Apparently I had a lesson - I'd forgotten all about it! We decided we were even.

Why are horse people so darn crazy and weird??? How many other professions can people get away with some of this stuff? I am a private music teacher and I can count on my one hand how many times that I have personally cancelled a lesson in the last 10 years...and it was either sickness, emergencey or death in family.

I cancelled once because I got stuck in a traffic slow-down. As I finally got to the slow vehicle I see one of the horse trailer tires is flat and it's limping towards the exit on the other 3 tires. As I start passing the vehicle I realize it's a good friend (who lives 6 hours away) with her two under-8 boys. I "pilot vehicled" her to the exit and helped her fix the tire while we waited for the (late) roadside assistance.
Kudos to Ibex who was very understanding that day ;-)

With one of my (now ex-) trainers, my lessons were often cancelled or delayed because she forgot about them.
We get along so much better now that I'm no longer a client!

I am a working student and since my lessons are free I tend to be the one who gets a lesson canceled if something comes up. Luckily my trainer is pretty good about having good reasons for canceling.
Though some of these are HILARIOUS!
Bless my breeches I have a good trainer. :)

An old trainer of mine used to not even cancel! I'd get to the barn only to have the asst. trainer/BM tell me "Trainer won't be here today, but you can hack so-and-so!"
I guess it was nice I was left horses to ride, but now that I ride 45 minutes away I am ultra paranoid that new trainer won't call for cancelations either! She doesn't have an indoor so if its raining I always call and ask if there is still a lesson before I leave. She'd probably call me and tell me herself but I don't want to risk it!

My latest trainer just plain stopped showing up about 6 or so weeks ago.I have no idea why. I cannot get her to answer an e-mail or the phone. I actually thought something really awful had happened to her such as a terrible horse-related injury or a car crash, but then I saw where she had answered an ad on a local site for someone else who was looking for someone to ride a pony a few times. Also she just placed an ad to sell a lg.pony at a "reduced" price. So she obviously needs to make some money. I gave her steady work, we got along fine, she got along with the horse great. Why would she do this????

I once had a Saturday morning lesson at 7:30 AM (summertime). I get to the barn and am warming up with the other girl in my lesson, and notice that instructor's (who lives on property) truck is not in his driveway. He pulls in to his house about 7:29 AM and goes inside and goes to bed! No "hey, I can't do your lesson" or anything! Turns out he had been out all night participating in extracurricular activities with one of the student's moms ;)

My trainer cancelled a lesson because... she was really really sick!
I can't believe all the stories of trainers who skipped lessons to pick up a pack of smokes, watch the football game, etc.... guess I've had good instructors!
(Except for the 19-year-old one who talked on her cell phone or texted all lesson, but the heading isn't "My trainer was a wench because...")
