If anyone has access to Equibase or one of the other sites, can you tell me about the racing record of "Starlight Excess" (1988 model). He ran 14 times, and was a winner at 5 as far as I can tell. He's a favorite retired schoolie, and its just out of curiosity since we were lucky enough to be able to identify him through the free service from The Jockey Club. I would appreciate it if anyone could look him up. :)
And speaking of The Jockey Club, I have to give a huge compliment to their staff, and a guy named Andrew in particular. We have a lovely old TB at our barn who is 31. He has one of the most crystal clear tattoos you could ever wish for, but unfortunately he doesn't exist in the JC database. Andrew was kind enough to call me back and let me know they had tried every possible trick to figure out who the horse is, but weren't successful. Either he was mis-tattooed, or somehow over the past 30 years the paperwork was screwed up. Very bummed we can't figure out who this grand old man is, but I have to say I'm impressed by how helpful they are over at there. Huge, huge props for offering the free service, and for going the extra mile to try and solve the non-existent tattoo. :)

You can get a tabulated race record through www.equineline.com for only $3. It will give you the years, races per year, place, and earnings per year, plus any black type.

that's not the start-by-start thing, though, right? I believe you can get the tabulated one for free through... hmm, can't remember now, but I managed it somehow. I thought the OP wanted the full PPs.

Thanks Epona. :)
I would ideally love to have more detail on his career and where he ran, but its not something that I want to spend money on. He's not my horse, just a retired sweet guy and it would be interesting to know more about him. I know sometimes people have pulled records before for others who have asked, so I just thought I would check. Thanks everyone for the suggestions though. :)

Thanks Jessi P! Interesting that they tried him long, short and and the grass. I think the biggest question for me is why he didn't run until he was 4. And how and when he ended up in California. :) I see his breeder is still active in the breeding business- wonder if she'd remember him so many years later.
I so wish the tattoo on the 31 year old had come back with a match- I would love to know what his breeding is, since he looks like a million bucks for his age and is still going strong. So frustrating to have the clearest tattoo on earth and have it not match anything!
Thanks again for taking the time to look up the info!

What's the tattoo number?
If it's one letter followed by four numbers, it could be a Standardbred. Have you checked that route?

The tattoo is H0848. Bay gelding, with snip on bridge of nose and snip between nostrils. It looks absolutely sharp and clear so it seems unlikely that it could be anything else. They tried different combos anyway, but couldn't get anything likely that came back as a bay horse or gelding. And they didn't require photos back then with registration, so even if they came back with a possibility they still wouldn't be able to confirm it was him. The JC were positive he was a TB, and he certainly looks like one to us. Back then TB's only had 1 letter and 4 numbers in their tattoos.

Any ideas? :)

I know any TB over 25 might have one letter and four numbers, but so do Standardbreds. You should still try his tattoo number as a Standardbred. How could TJC "know" he is a TB? I've seen Standardbreds who look like TBs. Scored huge in dressage on one who was gorgeous:)
Heck, one of my TBs looks exactly like an Arabian. Yes, TBs are decended from Arabians, but nobody thinks he's a TB -- I've had more people think he's a Standardbred than TB, too, because of his movement -- they just can't imagine he's a TB;)

I just checked, but no matches as an STB either.

That's too bad. He looks like a sweet boy -- and looks great for his age.

A standardbred of that age (31) would have a tattoo of 4 numbers with a letter on the end. The letter didn't move to the first position in the tattoo until 1982. There is an H0848 registered, but the markings and age don't match. I also tried a wildcard seach on ?084? since the three middle numbers are the most clear, still no potential matches.

It wouldn't hurt to drop her a note or make a phone call ... :) Chances are that she'd be delighted to hear her boy is doing well in his new job.

Not quite true. My STB, who was a 1975 model, was BS204. She was easily found (on microfiche!) by the USTA research department, after I resigned myself to the fact that my horse could be older then I was ;)
Prior to '79 will not appear on the online database, so a 31 year old mare wouldn't have had a hit anyway. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. But I do have an email address of the kind person who did the research on my mare and I could pass along a series of clear shots to her if you like.

He's retired now at 21, since he's not really sound enough to hold up to being a school horse any longer. He did also get to spend some time here and there being a "grandpa" to different weanlings, and I must say he was a fantastic nanny. :D Only problem was, he would get so attached to the babies that it was harder to wean him away then it was them. No more foals in the foreseeable future, so he just hangs out with two other retired buddies now. But I'll see if I can drop her a line- even if she doesn't remember him I'm sure it would be nice to know one of the horses you bred has had a nice life and is enjoying a comfortable retirement.
Josephine Gleis was his breeder- she had the stallion "Fly Till Dawn". I poked around the internet but didn't see any obvious ways of contacting her. Anyone know of her?

Man, could these registries get any more confusing??
His letter looks like a definite H- it may not look as clear on the photo, but looking directly at it I would say its 99.7% an H. But that wouldn't make him old enough if he was an STB according to their registry. He definitely is in his later 20's/early 30's, knowing how long this barn has had him and roughly how old he was when they bought him ages ago..... Which points back to being a TB with an impossible tattoo. Where's Sherlock Holmes when you need him??
