It claims:

Your horses can drink while you're driving, not just when you stop to re-fuel!

These slosh-proof nylon bucket rims have a soft, stretchy neoprene-lined bumper around the opening in the middle. Water gets trapped behind the bumper and won't slosh out due to the movement of the trailer, yet horses can drink all the way down to the bottom!

Looks interesting but I haven't the foggiest how I'd secure it in my 2-horse straight load.

I've never had any problems just hanging a bucket in a trailer, filled 3/4 full. I don't see why you'd need these things. I'd think if you have water sloshing out of the bucket, you really need to take a hard look at how you're driving your trailer--and slow down and take turns easier. If you can't keep water in the bucket, you're tossing your horses around.

LOL  true.

But since horses don't constant;y drink, I don't see a problem with watering when filling up (unless of course you have such a gosh darn efficient vehicle...;))

I probably wouldn't use this device, but I've seen a significant increase in water consuption for some horses when I hung the bucket in the trailer (1/2 full) rather than only watered at stops. (And yes, I checked that it hadn't just sloshed out.)

The biggest difference was picky drinkers, who usually wouldn't drink when offered a bucket at the stops. (The others drink when they're thirsty, and the smart ones drink when you offer it to them since they've figured out it'll be a couple hours til the next stop.) I feel much better about allowing them hay when they can access water as needed.

I always thought it might be a good idea to attach one of these http://www.petguys.com/-048054800270.html to a hose from a storage tank in the trailer. Do you think you could get your horse to use it ?

When travelling across the country, literally, I hung buckets 3/4 full as well. But, i put apples in them so the horses would dunk and dive for them as we drove along. I think I am one of the few people I know who's horses gained weight while travelling across the continent.

I could see one of my two getting it stuck on their nose!

Also, I wonder how well it would work when the horse was wearing a halter?

I think it looks like a clever idea. I'm always impressed that people come up with such neat new products.

This concept really isn't new. We've had water holes (http://www.arcatapet.com/item.cfm?cat=1700) for dogs for over 20 years...

Amen

I had a crazy trainer as a junior who meted out pearls of wisdom just often enough to make me put up with her. One of them was never to let someone trailer your horse if they can't keep a 1/2 full styrofoam cup from spilling over in the dressing room.

She was crazy, so I think the standard was a little unreasonable-- but a 1/2 full bucket of H20 hanging up, very reasonable.

For the really long trips, we just hang buckets in with the horses. They don't spill.

For the not quite as long, we offer water at fuel stops. The veteran travellers always drink -- the youngsters soon learn!
