Equestrian champion Ryan suffers stroke
May 18, 2009 - 7:14PM
Australian equestrian champion Heath Ryan is recovering in hospital after suffering a stroke while competing at an event in Camden, southwest of Sydney, on the weekend.
A spokesperson for Campbelltown Hospital said he was in a stable condition.

Brother of triple Olympic gold medallist Matt Ryan, Heath had recently returned from an international competition in Las Vegas.

The 50 year-old, from the Hunter Valley in NSW, had competed at last year's Olympics in Beijing where he had a best result of eighth as part of the teams event.
Prior to that Ryan had been assistant coach with the Australian equestrian team at the Atlanta, Sydney and Athens Olympics.

Heath was competing in the CIC3*** at the Camden Equestriad.

He had just returned from Las Vegas where he made his World Cup dressage debut on Regardez Moi. How many upper level eventers can claim this? More to the point, how many of the WC dressage riders could come home and ride 3*** eventing?

The latest news is that Heath is doing fine. He has amazing energy and burns the candle at both ends and in the middle. He has a big performance horse auction planned for next weekend (he usually does demos on the stallions, spruiks the sale horses and supports the auctioneer....).

Glad to hear he's feeling a bit better. I met him at Rolex a few years ago and he was just the nicest person and a lovely rider. Hopefully things continue to go well for him!
