Rather new to this forum and not very good with the search function so please bear with me.
Need a recommendation for a good fly spray that will work and is not going to irritate the skin of a sensitive horse.
I was using Farnham Endure until one of my Arabs broke out in a nasty little rash.
Thanks

I haven't really found anything that last more than an hour or two - I use Endure though not much. I find that using too much tends to make their skin flaky and itchy. I started leaving my two TB's out 24/7 so at night they'll be wearing fly sheets mainly for the flies and mosquitos. They'll wear them during the day up until the deer flies, horse flies, etc. come out - I've seen those big nasty bugs get caught up under the sheets and that's not a pretty site to see (frantic horse trying to get something off him that is trapped ). Mine have access to shelter and typically will go inside which keeps the nasty bug off them. I think i've pretty much given up trying to find a bug spray that will actually work .

whatever's on sale. They all IMO do about the same. I'm on Tri-Tech right now. Had a free quart with a gallon purchase!

I just started using Thomas's fly spray recipe and it works quite well, still experimenting but it is doing great so far. I did a test spot on my horse first since he has reacted to sprays before but he is fine with this one. I need a few more nights of use to make sure it is keeping the noseeums away but so far so good.

LOVE Thomas's fly spray. It's working really well right now, shall see come later summer how it holds up to our MASSIVE mosquitoes!
Otherwise, I make my own fly spray... vinegar, Avon's Skin So Soft and some water. Works well, if a bit greasy. Kinda why I like Thomas's receipe. It's not greasy/oily at all. And smells lovely .

Was your Pyranah the aersol or the pump spray? I found the pump kind USELESS too, while the aerosol works great, but I HATE that it is an Aerosol.
Let's start a list - nice start above - I've had good luck with Endure, DuraGuard, Wipe, BugBlock (purple container), and aerosol Pyrhanah.
No luck at all with Bronco (darn, it is cheap), Ultrashield, and any of the spot-ons.

Yep, it sure was. I'm with you, I hate aresols. First year I used it, LOVED it!!! Next year it was useless.
Bronco smells like gasoline to me (although I do keep it on hand for my cheapo spray)..everyone who is around when I spray it, always comment on how wonderful it smells....it makes me want to gag.

I've heard Pyranha does wonders. Friend from Alabama has massive mosquitos and flies, and he swears by this.

I use Endure, but I spray lightly then brush it into the haircoat with a soft body brush. Only have to reapply down here in Ga. every 10 days (except for lower legs, that is about 7 days). My TWH is extremely sensitive to everything, gets flakes and rashes, but if I spray LIGHTLY and then brush in, she does fine and the flies stay off.
She's so bad with allergies that I have to put a flymask on her or her eyes get all gunky and vet said she has allergies but the Endure seems to work the best. I use roll on around her face.
I have used Duraguard and it worked well.
I am thinking of trying Thomas' recipe when the Endure runs out. I used to make my own but got a little lazy this year and I really hate the smell of Endure (even though it works, it stinks~!)

Flysect Citronella.
FYI-The Marigold spray smells wonderful, but is nothing more than horsey perfume :)

Have any of you tried the spot-on type of fly repellents....wondering how they work?

Ricochet. An all natural fly spray that really does work.

Endure has always worked well for me, the roll-on I found to be even better. But I don't use the roll-on as much, since it is a pain to be rolling it on all over my horse (which is what I was doing! He had streaks!). The spray works fine if not as well, but does the job. I haven't had issues with it on my horse, nor have the others I've used it on. I haven't noticed skin problems.
My friend's POA is allergic to a bunch of different sprays, but the other horses all can tolerate them fine. I think it really does depend on the horse.

Maybe. I used the spray toady and I like it a lot. It smells good, which is nice! ;) It got ride of the flies around his belly and flanks. We have baby flies right now and they've been eating them alive.

I just purchased WIPE with .20% Pyrethrins
and
Absorbine Uultrashield with .50 Permethrin and .10 Pyrethrin
Frankly, nothing I have tried works super well : we just feel compelled to try.
For mosquitos after a dry spell followed by rain, nothing but a DEET product, like Deep Woods Off but I think there is a product at Wal-Mart for outdoorsmen that comes recommended but have not gone looking yet.

Endure roll on is fine on her face just can't use it anywhere else on this horse. One poster suggested doing a light spray with it and brushing it in. Think I'll do a small test and see if she reacts to that.
If not I'll try duraguard and see how that goes for her.
To all the other posters.. thanks for the suggestions. Will have to experiment a bit for this one since she has sensitive skin.

Gordon's Horse and Pony spray is the only stuff I've found that seems to last for more than just a few hours. It works very well, but it oil-based. Some people don't like oil based sprays, but its excellent if you don't mind it.
