View Full Version : Nervous about Preakness?

Wanted to be respectful and keep this off the racing forum, but is anyone else nervous about the Preakness? So much drama and fairytale-ness going in, and so much recent history of dramatic breakdowns. I used to love racing, but I just can't watch live anymore. Hope everyone comes home safe and sound!

I'm nervous about every race. I was at the 1990 Breeder's Cup when Go For Wand broke down, and have seen several other fatal breakdowns since (Hello was particularly tough--I loved that brave little horse). So I can't watch a race without some apprehension. This one is probably a little worse than usual. If you are going to watch horse racing you just have to accept that it is an ugly part of the game, and that it can happen at any time.

I'm nervous too-especially since they seem to reshow some of Barbaro or at least talk about it. I look away from the TV, but listen and then watch the reruns.

I won't watch these big races live anymore. I just dread them too much. BUT, with today's technology, I can see the whole race within minutes on YouTube, so if it's has a happy outcome, I'll catch it that way.

The surprise ending might be spoiled this way, but I also don't have to be surprised by the sight of a a horse breaking into little pieces, should that happen.

Always nervous watching horse races...I watch more for a bobbled step than I do for who's winning.
But have to say that although I am not usually a racing fan/watch races I am very interested in today's race. I know Rachel Alexandra really threw a wrench into things being entered in the Preakness...but dang will this be interesting. :D She's huge moving fast...and now she has Borel up instead of him riding Mine That Bird...it'll be fun to see how this race goes. I know folks want to see a triple crown win...I just don't think MTB will do it. It would be fun to see a filly take this win, but just as fun to see MTB take the win. Or anyone else...lotta hype on this race.
After Borel won the Oaks on her he did say that he doesn't think another horse can beat her...and that he's never asked her to run so he has no idea just what she can do when asked.
Now let's just hope everyone crosses the finish line healthy and whole...horses and jockeys alike.

I was upset they showed so much of the Eight Belle's footage during the Derby. I don't think anyone really needs to be reminded of that. :(

Fingers crossed that everyone crosses the wire safe and sound!

I do have my heart in my throat when watching races. But the same when watching eventing or even show jumping. Every steps seems a split second from potential catastrophe!! But I'll watch anyway.

But it is the chances taken and accepted risk in racing an animal or person flat out before maturity.

Yeah, I'm worried too. No good reason, but I'm glad I'll be in the car on my way to the barn when it's running. I'll be happy to watch it later this evening ... after everything goes off OK.

Good luck to all the horses, and may everyone come home safe and sound.

Won't watch - can't watch.

I just pray for the babies to come home safe and sound.

I'm just nervous because I've bet some money that I can't really afford to lose...

Hurray for the filly! What a neat race...but now I have to say that I wss surprised to see MTB fly up like he did again! Not on the rail and with a different jockey. If they had another 1/8 of a mile I think he would have caught her.
Huh...now as much as I'm thrilled for Rachel Alexandra beating the boys...now I'm sorta disappointed that we actually did have a triple crown contender and MTBs Kentucky Derby win wasn't just a lucky combination of maneuvers. I really didn't think MTB would come in more than third. But he was flying!

I'm always terrified...but maybe I'm fixing the system!

I put money on the Derby (and lost) and put money on the Preakness (and won, with Rachel, so not very much) and in both races, everyone came home safely...

If my husband can consistently make the Mets lose by actually sitting down to watch a game with me, then maybe I can bring the ponies home safely by putting some money on them...:D

You said it. Horse racing is disgusting. I can't stand to watch it. I hate it when people ask me at work if I watched a race. NO, I did NOT, thank you very much. :dead:

Hooray for RA! Watched the race just before we went out to check on the horses. What a fabulous race.

I'm always a little worried about them, but I can watch the races live, no problem.

Never really bothers me. You use horses, there'll be breakdowns. Racing makes me less nervous than the cross-country phase of eventing, and I'd rather watch flat racing than steeplechasing (though at least in steeplechase the fences aren't as solid.)

I don't watch live. I record and watch later after someone else gives me the all clear. Even after my homepage totally ruined the surprise for me (thanks, MSN:rolleyes:) I was still nervous watching.

I'm sad MTB doesn't have a chance at the crown, but I was rooting for RA. I figured it would be a lot closer this time (I wanted her to whomp everyone, but didn't think she would) and even though MTB didn't win, I'm pleased that he wasn't a one hit wonder. Can't help but wonder what would have happened if RA wasn't there.
