So I have a few young horses that will not be ready to compete till fall. I could probably take one of them Novice or Training right now, but I prefer a good solid foundation and for it to be a good experience for them so want to wait even on him till late summer/fall. I was wondering if there are any unrecognized events or even hunter paces/trials in or around area IV. I am located in WI. I just figured with fees and all since we won't get started till later in the year, maybe the schooling/ unrated way is the way to go this year and then get an early start in the spring. Plus the stable I am at is puting in a XC course this year (small but will have banks, water, etc) and alot of the time and money for showing will go into that.

Illinois Dressage & Combined Training (IDCTA) has a lot of good combined training and mini-events in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. Check out their website - www.idcta.org.

Wisconsin is not exactly small; Green Bay to Hudson is over 250 miles
and Beloit to Hurley over 300 miles. If you are in eastern WI, the
above is probably very good. If you are around Wausau and points
west, take a look at the CSDEA.org calendar; there are several
schooling shows in the region in addition to the recognized Otter
Creek competition. The competition our farm hosts in mid-August
is just one of the several choices that might suit your needs.

GQ,
A bit too far for a day trip for you, but we have a lot of unrecognized events in "Area 35" (southern Area IV and northern Area V). The majority are held at the same venues as our local Recognized shows but there's a few venues in Oklahoma that are currently unrecognized but may, eventually, go Recognized. Check out the website (below) for details of the next three months.

There are a few here in the St. Louis area.
Nancy Roth Cedar lane farm has one in August and one in October.
Queeny Park has one in September this year.
Moonlight Equestrian center usually has a couple.
I think Catalpa corners in Iowa is having one the last weekend in May. Its a one day, that might be doable for you.

Depending on where in WI you are I agree with the IDCTA mini events. Fox Valley Saddle Association always puts on nice events and they are in Hampshire IL. My horse is in Mukwonago and it's about a 2 hour drive. They also have open schooling a week and a half before all of their events.

The one at Catalpa Corner is at the end of the month. They made a weekend deal out of it and are offering free xc schooling on Friday and Saturday, free stabling, and then the show is on Sunday. www.catalpacorner.org

Thanks everyone! We plan on going to the mini events in July,August, and Sept. So if anyone is going to the mini events in IL during that time look for a big black with 4 white socks WB stallion over jumping everything in his path, and a crabby looking, but beautiful huge moving, bay TB who is very aggressive over fences *in a good way!* :D

There's actually two unrecognized shows in Iowa City this month. Bill Coester is running an "Event Derby" at Wind's Reach this coming weekend and then there's the Catalpa Corners free XC Schooling (29 & 30) & Schooling HT (31). Area IV Adult Riders will also be holding a clinic in conjunction with Field Day (camstock on this board) on the schooling days.

I'm in Area VIII, not Area IV, but about 3 hours south from the Chicago/WI border and regularly get people for my schooling shows from IL. That may be too far for you (and I don't have water as of this point) but I do have regular derby's and two mini-trials per year.
