I am interested in looking for a new sly sheet for my horse. the thing is he is in dessert weather here in SO. CA. so it can easily get up to 100+ in the summer by 11am. and he sweats very easily. Any ideas for something that would not make him hot? my sister has a kensington for her friesian, but he is black and it does well to block the sun, but my horse is in almost full shade, I am not worried about the sun but the weight of the sheet. I will be looking on ebay because I have a tight budget.

I think the textilene sheets (ie, Kensington or the Rambo Protector) are the coolest. They don't lay snug against the body like softer sheets do, they kinda hover an inch or so above it, being the stiffer material.
My mare will sweat profusely in a soft mesh fly sheet, and will only sweat somewhat in the Kensington. She's gonna sweat no matter what, I live in IL and we get 100% humidity, high heat days that are just horrendous. :no:

The Rambo actually seems really hot to me and that's why I sold mine. It's a thick material and I think my horse was more uncomfortable wearing that then battling with the bugs. Maybe that's why he broke a few pieces of hardware on it...
I also found that the Saxon fly sheets ripped every easily.
I don't see a need for my current horse to wear one though.

dessert weather
Dessert = "strawberry shortcake"
Desert = hot
:winkgrin: I'm a Journalism major, so what can I say ;).
That being said, I've never used a fly sheet because they are such a hassle, and I like giving my boys at least one season, blanket-free. Saying that... I like the Kensingtons. They look like they'd hold up well and don't seem to snag as much. The lighter weight ones don't look like they'd stand the test of time (or other horses' mouths). My boys aren't hard on their clothing, but they still manage to get some small tears each year in their high denier turnout blankets.

I'm another Southern CA horse owner and I use the Saratoga Horseworks flysheet (their basic one, costs around $50). I've used them for years and while they aren't the most durable, I think they are the lightest.
That being said, whenever the temperature gets above 100, I remove the sheets.

Ok so here is my lame excuse for the bad spelling, I was just in a bad car accident Thursday rolled the truck and totaled it and my glasses got crushed, so when I go back and proof read some of my things I couldn't see everything quite right. LOL ok I'm a bad speller. But it is good weather for strawberry shortcake too! lol.
Thanks for the info on the sheets, That helps me out a lot! I will keep saving money and hopefully get one soon.

Check out the new TurtleNeck fly sheet. It is made with monofilament (fishing line) so it is very strong but very light. It has a 1 year warranty for rips and tears.
good luck.

Not a fan of the Kensington's - my mare might as well have been wrapped in Saran wrap with it :dead:
I just bought a "Kool Koat" - the girl at the local feed store had a lot of success with hers last summer so I thought I'd give it a try! My trainer swears by her Amigo fly sheet that is supposed to keep them a bit cooler as well.

:lol: Well, I'm glad you're okay at least. Scary about the car accident. :eek: And good luck with the fly sheet.
And, it's always good weather for a strawberry shortcake! :D

FWIW, I had a Tuff Rider fly sheet made out of the monofilament, and my mare DESTROYED it in a measly 24 hours.
Ibex; Good luck with the Kool Koat. I've not heard good things honestly, because they're partly made with just solid cotton material, it's not even full mesh.

2nd the Weatherbeeta Koolcoat. Our Alex was in a barn fire and must have something with ultra uv protection on when out in any sun year round. We tried the fly sheets and found them too hot and sweaty. The Koolcoat is less sweaty and has held up for 3+ years now - however he's in during the day in heat of summer. Ours are the older style that fits and feels like a light sheet and we added extra UV cloth from Sunshades over the topline where he's bald. Works for us.
