I watched that TLC show The Pitchmen (with Anthony Sullivan and Billy Mays of AS SEEN ON TV fame) the other day. They covered this product: https://www.whatodor.com/flare/next - Billy Mays, in his personal testing, went to a locker room of a hockey team and almost fell over from the stink. He sprayed that stuff in helmets, pads, etc. and alll noses of the hockey players said "no more smell"

If this really does what it says, I'll buy a case of it. Even if it just works on my riding helmet I'll be happy, but I would love to be able to spray my house - alas "doggie" isn't a smell that all people loff

I don't know about that one but I eagerly await any other recommendations, as my old helmet is so skanky I am about ready to just buy a new one so I don't have to cringe every time I put it on. Ick ick ick!

According to the owner/inventor, it will even take care of skunk spray.

For helmets, have you tried the Charles Owen Helmet cleaner and helmet deoderizer? I haven't, but I've seen a demo. They are 2 separate products. You spray the cleaner in the helmet and wait as it foams up bringing up all sorts of dirt and crud. Its disgusting. Then you wipe away the foam. The deoderizer is a spray that you spray in like deoderant.

I haven't tried it yet, but I watched that show too, and I had the exact same thought! It's definitely on my project list for the week to order it, between horses and dogs I have plenty of stink around!

ick. buy a new one.
like skanky old sneakers. They are only supposed to be good for 6 months. after that, the footbeds flatten and wear out and they are not really doing their job. Unless your cat peed in your helmet, it really shouldn't be stinky after only a couple of years use. And after 5 years use, the cushioning foam in most helmets is starting to break down and doesn't do its job as well. Get a new one.

The Charles Owens deodorizing spray works miracles... as long as you leave the helmet out to air dry!! My old helmet smelled super bad after 4 years in SC with all that humidity.. it never had a chance to dry out completely and quickly after riding in it. When I got back to CO and started spraying it with the CO stuff and letting it dry, the smell went away. Suupppeeerrrr gross, I know, but my new CO is stinky-free and I'm still using the CO spray ;) the joys of being a sweaty rider. I hate the girls who take their helmets off and have perfect hair... haha

I solved the skanky smelly helmet problem ...put the helmet in the dishwasher. I have a GPA knock-off ... it works wonderfully.

I use the Charles Owen products(cleaner and deodorizer) and they do work really well. I keep my helmets in the barn and I hang them on helmet racks so they get the chance to dry inside and out and it helps make a difference.(dealing with humidity here, too so it's not a perfect solution)

Does anyone know if I can put schooling helmets in the dishwasher? (Like troxels with the dial in back?) What setting on dishwasher? Special soap?

Sold at Sam's Club and Walmart is a GREAT product. I don't know about spraying it in helmets but it works amazingly on everything. We had a dog that was very sick with a parvo like illness (not parvo, she was vaccinated for it) and had to be kenneled on the deck in an expen so that it could be hosed frequently. When it was over the entire area reeked. My husband mixed Odoban in a garden sprayer and the odor was gone immediately. You can spray rugs, furniture and put it in the washer with mildewed clothing. It's great stuff to have around.

i second the Charles Owen deodorizer. CO sent our equestrian team a giant box of fun stuff and it had the deodorizer/cleaner. The stuff is AWESOME. My helmet was so bad that the rest of the team was making fun of it and it took the stink right out!

Has anyone tried baking soda? (sprinkle in, let sit, vacuum out?)

I can't dishwasher mine, as it is velvet and lined...

:uhoh: I just use the regular cycle, and use 1/2 the amount of LIQUID dishwasher soap. Comes out wonderfully. I'm sure it would work on something like troxels.

Thank you very much, Oldenburg mom! Much appreciated! I like to try to keep those lesson helmets clean! :)

I did try the Charles Owens stuff, but I wasn't sure how much actual grime it removed. It did make me feel better, though, and it did remove any odors.

I do this too, with my GPA. I don't use the "hot" cycles, though. Just warm water and a little sterilizing detergent. When it's dry, I brush up the fake suede and Frebreeze it. I also throw my brushes, spurs, stirrups and bits in the dishwasher, too.

I was told that the NFL cleans helmets this way...

I've been using this product for about 2 months now and WOW! It is simply amazing! I use it in the laundry, on the furniture, the carpets AND the messy pony stall! The great thing is that it's only $10.99 for a gallon at Home Depot! It's a concentrate, and a little goes a long way. I think it kills 99% of bacteria, so it can be used as a general purpose spray cleaner as well. It smells great - not flowery, and I will never use any other product now.
