"Big Eq"? I was speaking with someone the other day who was speaking of a sale pony on bigeq.com and she kept referring to the site as "big eck" (think the first syllable of equitation). I have never heard anyone pronounce it this way...always "big e q" (like eeee, que). Just making sure I am not crazy ignorant!

Big Eq as in big Ek.
I cringe when ever I hear eeek for equine. Where I live there are no ekuines they are all eeekkkuines... But then again this is the same area in which the foal is "out of' < name of stallion> .

Or hearing someone (and it happens too much) say foal out a mare.

You don't foal out anything. The mare foals. Period.
You take you mare for someone else to foal for you, but you don't foal out...............

Completely agree, but we're talking grammatically here. To foal (verb) means to deliver.

Both are correct ;)
ee-kwahyn, ek-wahyn are both acceptable, according to Webster's

That goes along with the "verb-izing" thread ;)

Makes perfect sense though, since it's still the first syllable, correctly pronounced, of the word :)

Hmmmm...but Doctors still deliver babies...

this is debatable. I only had a dr for the first 2 of my 5(midwife for the others) and I'm thinking it is safe to say I birthed my babies. No one "delivered them". Pizzas are delivered, LOL!

back on topic I always say Big Eck

Delivered babies go back to the whole stork theory...ahhh, nevermind...

I've always pronounced Big Eq, Big Eck....

Also agree on the foal out, drives me crazy to hear that!

I have to agree with everyone else - Big ECK.

Round these parts, we do watch a mare foal, too.
