The dreaded first wipe out of the year, happened last night.
It's funny how I always fret about getting tossed, and then when it happens I'm like, huh, that wasn't so bad. Either that or I'm so rattled, I don't 'think' it's that bad- jury is still out.
My tailbone is a bit on the bruised side(not to mention my ego- as my birthday present from my horse was apparently a buckfest:)) and I've got a ride next weekend, so hmm, I might hafta find some extra padding for the rump area, or it's gonna be a long painful 50 miles.:)
Gotta love kids though. Riding with my son, and he says *after I pick myself up of the ground* well you lasted longer then dad normally does, he bucked like 6 times before you fell.
Awesome. *sigh*

LOL I always think that the thought of it is worse then the actual!
I parted ways on my guy a few weeks ago out on the trails, first time (on trails) that I've come off in about twenty years!!
Like you a bruised ego more then anything hehe.

what caused him to buck 6 times in the first place?? Was this a new horse that you were breaking or what??

I agree - the thought of being tossed is always way worse then the actual.
I confess I come off about once a year, since I'm always taking babies or re-training a horse or 3.
@Shadow - new horse yep. He came in for training about a month ago, nice (really nice, I was drooling a bit, he's a real looker) Crabbet gelding 4 yr old, but hot and very touchy. Was only his second time out on the trails. Would probably not have happened, but my son's horse had a small spook, and that set the 4 yr old off.

I parted ways with mine one too many times, and I parted ways with him. NO MORE GREENIES. Repeat, no more.......

You know, I keep saying that myself.
Somehow I seem to forget I've said it. Must be the oldtimers setting in.

Yeah me too. Which is why the current fleet are 6 and 4 years old. Gonna trailer the 4 yo to a nearby park tomorrow for a change of pace...nice soft sandy trails and some good hills to work on. She had a world class bucking fit last fall when stung by a bee, but so far, that was a one time deal...
Ironically, so far, when another horse spooks/misbehaves/whatever she makes herself very small, quiet and still...I like that attitude.

Green horses are something of an addiction. :D

If it weren't for the greenies, we wouldn't have good stories to tell!
I say this thinking of all my projects just waiting to be started or restarted. Ugh! I'm getting too old for this and have been spoiled by having 2 easy to ride endurance horses.

With the last green horse I got in, "green broke" as she was described, I waited until I had no other horse to ride before I got her going. I used to love the greenies, and now I can't help but think of recovery time, lost work (I'm a trimmer, and I need two functioning arms and two good legs to work), my kids, and everything else when things start to go bad.
In some ways, I'm much braver than I used to be (because I ride better now). In others, not so much.
Turns out, I don't think the "green broke" horse had been more than backed, if that. So far she hasn't dumped me, but the potential is there. I've gotten too used to TB's, and a young Arab is a bit of a different riding experience.

And I can't even use "green horse" as an excuse for getting tossed. sigh. but really, I can't blame him for running and bucking away from the attacking groundhog. I was hanging in there until he tried to squeeze through the 3-foot-wide fence gap at a dead gallop... he got through just fine - my left leg, not so much.
Lesson of the day - groundhogs are not always scared of horses. And Sasha is now scared of groundhogs.
