View Full Version : Jersey Fresh Scores??

I've heard some crazy scores coming back from the CIC 3 star.
I think Comet got a 50 (and that might be the best score so far??). When was the last time he scored a test that high?
Anyone able to list some scores here please do. I'm sitting at work and have only heard tidbits here and there about the scores.

remember, these are FEI scores. An FEI 75 is the equivalent of a horse trials 50, so an FEI 50 is actually a very nice score, equivalent to something like a 33. And, in addition to other complaints about the Jersey website, they have never been timely about posting scores.

Understood, but if you look at the history of the pairs scores in previous FEI events that is a high score for them.
2008 Olympics 35.7
2008 Rolex 39.3
That being said I did see they scored a 55 in the CIC 3 star at the fork last year so I guess it's not impossible for them to be less than brilliant once or twice.
Nothing wrong with a 50 in an FEI event though. Just not so great if your Comet I guess.

Looks like full CIC *** results are posted, Comet is 3rd. First is Mara with like a 47.3 so they are all higher then one would think they would be.

OK, I totally take back my comment about their timeliness. This was very quick! My hat is off to Jersey Fresh as I apologize.

Yeah, that was pretty fast. No complaints here. Scores are high for few I would think but I wasn't there.

Thanks, I swear I looked for that but obviously didn't. I still don't quite understand the difference, but don't bother ... it's been explained to me, and I never remember. It's a bit esoteric, no?

I just realized that Allison doesn't have Burger there... Unless I'm blind (which could be!). I thought she had decided to aim him here instead of Kentucky (or maybe it was Bromont... idk)

I heard the weather was bad on Thursday (raining) and all the dressage was ridden in an indoor arena (who knew they had an indoor there?) and today (Friday) the weather was nice but they were still riding the dressage in the indoor. Becky commented that Comet had a "spooky" test and that might explain the slightly higher than normal dressage score - but it appears all the scores are high.
It supposed to rain again tonight. Footing for XC is wet, some of the loops might be questionable so it will be interesting to see what they do.

Just as an aside...I was reading the coverage of the Florida CCI in my COTH today and then checked the jersey fresh scores and noted there is at least one horse who completed the CCI** in Florida April 14 and is now contesting the CCI*** in New Jersey 3 weeks later.
Ouch! I hadn't realized that the short-format competing mania had gotten THAT bad. Yikes.

And also too: a horse in the CCI** who completed the CCI** at FL Horse Park 3 weeks ago.
Two CCI**s in three weeks? The point of this is what, exactly?
Said horse will have done 3 CCI** and 1 CCI* in just over a year. Couldn't really do that in the old days, could you?
This is proof that a CCI is just a horse trial with FEI paperwork and a jog before the dressage and SJ.

do you mean a CIC because there are 2 jogs in a CCI and I don't believe that a CCI is a horse trial with FEI paperwork.

It isn't that someone COULDn't do that in the old days.....most people WOULDN'T do that....and still most people wouldn't do that with a CCI.

Yes. I didn't finish my sentence.
The distinction I was attempting to make was that the nouveau CCI is clearly not the same test of the horse as the old format. Either that or our perceptions have changed as to how much is too much. Or both.

As was noted ad naseum on another thread, I strongly believe that there are A LOT (not all) of riders who over-compete their horses and this trend has developed over the last ten years. I think there is a ton of pressure from American Team Coaches to compete very aggressive schedules. That philosophy has spread significantly and is now considered the "norm" for an awful lot of riders (again, NOT all).
Since this is a Jersey Fresh thread, I pulled one CCI*** Rider's USEA records, as an example, and found she ran six times in just over 90 days just prior to Jersey Fresh (rougly Feb, Mar, Apr) -- generally every two weeks. Her last outing was the weekend before Jersey Fresh, on the opposite coast. Jersey Fresh will be her 7th competition in approximately 14 weeks.
Some were Intermediate HT, some Advanced HT and one was a CIC***. She did retire at one Advanced HT and was eliminated at a second, so I guess one could argue that she didn't actually finish two of the seven competitions. But, the fact that she isn't getting around Advanced Level Horse Trials actually gives me a great deal of pause. I found by looking at the records, she had no clean XC runs at any show other than her first intermediate of the year and she had XC penalties at Intermediate the week before a CCI***.
Since I am only looking at published results, it is possible that I do not know the whole story and I will say that this pair has been successful at this level in previous years. I certainly wish her and her horse a safe and successful go. However, the history on paper doesn't seem like a great lead up to a CCI*** -- both from a frequency of competition and lack of clean XC runs at less difficult levels than she is running this weekend.
Perhaps I am remembering "the good old days" through rose colored glasses, but I don't remember a lot competition schedules looking like this and this is not the only rider on this kind of schedule, by any means. I am sure if I had the patience to pull other competitors records, I would find more of the same (and, to be fair, others who were more conservative). Since we don't have access to competitive records from ten plus years ago, it is all anecdotal to some extent, but I truly believe a side by side comparison would show much more aggressive scheduling today by a larger percentage of riders.

Agreed, SevenDogs.
I've pulled some records somewhat randomly this year to see what my mare's schedule looked like vs. her competitors. It's been quite an education. 6 year-olds at Prelim who've already run 20something LL HTs (that would be 10+ HTs/season at 4 and 5?). Prelim horses doing 10-12 events (HTs, CIC*s and CCI*s) in 8-9 months.
But yes, there are some BNRs and not-so BNRs who compete their horses sparingly. Haven't come across too many of them, however.

There absolutely are great riders showing great horsemanship out there today. Unfortunately, they don't seem to get the recognition they deserve very often.

Ok, I have a quick question; How can KOC and Doug Payne both have horses named Rocket? Are their registered names different? Also, at this time, what is the point or difference between the CIC*** and the CCI*** besides cost and FEI paperwork?

Mike Tucker made an interesting comment on today's Badminton feed concerning the last horse to go, and current leader after XC, Flint Curtis. He said that the rider, Oliver Townend, was getting better results out of him lately by competing him less frequently. The ethos seems to be much different here, and the results speak for themselves.

The rider I used as an example of what I considered an aggressive competition schedule leading up to Jersey Fresh was eliminated in XC today. hmmmm....

I would be interested to see the competition records of the folks in Europe compared to here. Because they have A-I competitions during the week too so they can get more runs in. I remember Lucy Weigersma's diary in the UK eventing magazine and they seem to go about every weekend, whether it be a HT, CT, or SJ. And the competition is way stiffer over there so there's more pressure.
Then there's AUS/NZ where they are so spread out, they rarely compete and then when they do, they kick butt. And once they kick butt over there, they go to the UK and take the world by storm.
And honestly, I try to stack my schedule up because I never know what's going to happen. Like I was supposed to go to a jumper show today but Winston decided to twist his ankle and then proceed to make a hot nail.
For me, I think I'm in the boat where I will go every other week to a dr or sj competition to hone those skills. Then have an event every month or so. But that's us. We don't do well with let down time.
