So who's going?

I just heard that late entries are still being accepted and there will be no classes on the hill this year! Yea!!!!!:yes::yes: Hopefully the weather will be uncharacteristically wonderful, cool and dry!

I am half-way considering going, if I don't get my scores this weekend at Pinehurst. That is awesome that no classes will be on the hill. I wonder how they are able to do that, expect if the entries are that low.

Wait listed for the Capital Dressage Classic or CDI? I can't imagine they were telling folks that last week because it just closed for entries Friday, May 1 and they've just entered all the entries this week. Late entries are definitely coming in.

It apparently will be a 4-ring show with the CDI classes in the indoor and covered and the national show classes in the ring behind barn E and the ring that runs parallel with the breezeway (south side) between the indoor and covered. I think they are planning on extending the show day to fit all rides into 4 rings.

We are going with 5 horses this year. We always have a blast at this show and good to hear there will be no walking up "the Hill":)

I have showed there in the past and eliminating the classes on the hill is a blessing! Good luck to all those who attend, it is a fun show.

we're not going this time for the first time in years....just had enough of what seems like the eternally cranky CDI judges there.

anyone else see it that way or are we just bad sports?

It's my understanding the the rings on the hill no longer exist. I believe they will eventually be replaced, but that space was allocated for something more important like a parking lot...

They were supposed to have been redone and usable for CDI/CDC but they are not......YET. They MIGHT be but it's a long shot for sure! Plans are underway for not using the hill unless it is suitable!:yes::yes:

I don't necessarily think the judges are "cranky" --- just probably a higher calibre (international) than most are used to riding for, so perhaps the expectation is higher. For sure there are no "Santa Clause" judges at CDI/CDC and you earn the scores you're given as a rule in my opinion. I've definitely heard comments of "tough judge" by many, but when looking at the day sheets for that judge they were consistent and fair and the rides placed as they should have.

I also heard that there was a wait list for the CDI because so many horses were coming from the west coast and using Raleigh as a warm up for Gladstone. I entered the CDI and was worried about being wait listed so I emailed Patsy Albers. She's show secretary for the CDI....so she ought to know! She emailed me back that I got in (I sent my entries overnight so they were recieved right before closing date), so, while she didn't say so, I doubt that there is a wait list. Also, there are no entries from California. Patsy said the CDI entries were about the same as last year. So much for horse show rumors!! lol!

Raleigh is a great show and I can't wait to compete there again this year. Now all I have to do is ride well.....

I just verified with Janine Malone directly...there is NO WAITLIST for either show. Late entries are still being accepted!

Hmm -I tend to prefer riding for judges with bigger letters after their names, finding them in general better at assessing the essence of each movement. I don't find "crankiness" correlates positively or inversely with judge level. It's an independent factor. :) Maybe being a bigger show, with more judges, increases the odds of someone in any barn having to ride for "the cranky judge" ??

No ruckus at all:D! Patsy and Tina have been receiving questions too, so somewhere somehow the rumor got started and has grown. There'll be a news release soon about the rings that I'll post here too.

CDI-W/Y/J Raleigh and Capital Dressage Classic - May 29-31, 2009

May 9, 2009 –

Event Manager Janine Malone announced today that the first of several much-anticipated improvements to three outside competition and warm-up rings at the NC State Fairgrounds “Hunt Horse Complex” in Raleigh , NC have recently been completed. The main schooling ring at the venue has been renovated. Drainage tile has been installed under the competition ring near Barn E. It has been graded with a 2% slope, laser leveled and the perimeter has been graded for better drainage. The small arena near the indoor coliseum has been enlarged with the same improvements, including the installation of drainage tile. Footing has been replaced in all of these rings, including the large schooling ring, and maintenance of the footing is a high priority under the new facility manager, Dale Barnett

Due to ongoing concerns about the condition of the footing on the “hill” during heavy rain, the decision has been made not to use this area for the 2009 event. Janine notes that “our competitors have been overwhelmingly supportive of this decision.” In 2009, the show will be limited to four competition rings, using the indoor and covered rings, as well as the two renovated outside rings.

And “the hill” shouldn’t be a concern in the future. Although it was hoped that the planned new dressage and H/J competition “pad” would be finished in time for the 2009 CDI, the project was delayed. However, NC State Fair personnel have announced a new June 15, 2009 target date to break ground on an RV park to be built on the “hill” -- site of our old dressage rings. Ground breaking for the new 230’x300’ dressage and H/J pad, and parking area, is part of Phase I of the RV park construction. The $300,000 arena project calls for drainage tile throughout, with exact specs for the base, sub-base, drainage tile, landscape cloth and footing. The new arena complex will be built west of the barns, and Barn “E” arena, adjacent to the Comfort Suites property.

Please visit the CDI Raleigh website www.cdi-raleigh.com (http://www.cdi-raleigh.com) to view photos and more information on the improvements at the Hunt Horse Complex. A map of the new layout will be posted on the website.

Contrary to rumors, we do not have a wait-list for this year’s show and late entries are still being accepted. Contact Capital Dressage Classic secretary, Bettina Longaker (vadvirag8@gmail.com) or CDI Raleigh secretary, Patsy Albers (patsyalbers@yahoo.com (patsyalbers@yahoo.com)) if you would like to submit a late entry.

again, I can't explain it but if you compare scores for riders from the Raleigh CDI vs. Florida CDIs, it SEEMS like the scores are lower. I haven't done a real analysis so it's only a gross impression.

I've been told by multiple BNT (some on the USEF High Performance committee) that if you are on the list to go to Gladstone, don't show at Raleigh unless you're really high on the list because your CDI average will go down.

So I don't know if it's really true but I do know that it's believed by some experienced folks. I've been trying to figure out why this might be the case but no ideas so far. I'd be interested to know if anyone else has heard this or has any theories?

BTW, I think the show itself is very well run and I have a lot of respect for Janine Malone and the amazing energy she puts into it.

No, no theories.....but it's very interesting that many of the past judges at CDI Raleigh have also been judges at other CDI's as well as Gladstone. So, without data you do just have a "theory" (or as my dad used to tell me, without data it's just another opinion!:D:lol:). I definitely do not believe that judging at CDI Raleigh is any harsher or more lenient than any other CDI around the country.

I do suspect that some competitors who have already qualified for Gladstone do not opt for Raleigh because there's no need to, and those who have not qualified yet certainly do come and perhaps their scores seem lower because they are not yet the caliber of others already qualified....just trying to respond to your theory.
