On May 15th, Canada Post is releasing a collection of stamps for Canada's two heritage breed - The Canadian Horse and the Newfoundland Pony.

Of course, I have Newfoundland Ponies. Anyone with them, all across Canada, is being asked to ride or drive to their local post office and buy stamps on the release date.

I have the only ponies that will be participating in this in my area.

I've been grooming like crazy lately. She's clipped, bathed and blanketed. Brushed daily. My question is, what do I do with her mane?

It's pretty long and full. There is no breed standard when it comes to showing them in harness. I want it to be as long as it can be. So, no pulling and doing dressage bobbley braids. I can do that for her forelock though.

Should I do a running braid? A mane roll? I really don't like the diamond/fishnet looking things.

What's everyone think?

I personally think it would look better just tidied and left loose like we do with our native breed ponies.

Thanks, Thomas! The breed is made of exmoor, dartmoor, fell, dell, highland, and welsh... sooo. you hit the nail on the head with that one!

makes my job easier too!!

Well I never. That must be every native breed possible. ;)

I would condition it several days running. That would make it lie just a bit nicer.

Good looking pony. but I have said that before!

What should I condition it with?? Do you mean like, cowboy magic? or? Does people conditioner work? You can buy it in huge things from the store... cheap!

I've never body clipped her before... Now she looks like a big mini. haha. They don't tend to shed out until really late in the year... (July...)

This is her shedded, better looking, but months away.

partly clipped: look how thick it is! (this was three days ago)

We're moving to a nice big barn, something we don't have here, so I'm hoping being indoors and blanketed this winter she won't grow it.

(PS Thomas, if you haven't pieced yet, I'm the guy you highly advised not to board out my few stalls that I planned on building on TMS..)

I wouldn't personally bother to condition a mane for days. There's no need to. And trust me my horses are all outside in mud and come in filthy when I need to get them ready to be presented well.

What I do is bath them using human shampoo. Plenty of it! I buy a cheap one for dry hair by the gallon from a wholesaler. I use a car wash sponge soaked with water and shampoo directly on it to rub all over and then plastic curry comb to scrub it right into the base of their body hair to start and a plastic net shower scrub thingy to finish off for second wash and for doing the manesthen rinse and repeat using . I scrub the manes with the net right down to the roots. I start off by combing through to detangle with my fingers and then move to a wide toothed comb. That way you don't pull hair out.

I then use mane and tail show sheen (virtually the same as your cowboy magic). I put a little on the mane and then work that through with my fingers. Then the mane is brushed using a flat paddle brush.

We're moving to a nice big barn, something we don't have here, so I'm hoping being indoors and blanketed this winter she won't grow it. It probably won't grow quite so thick but with all those breeds she should still have a good winter coat. I don't know if you know but its the change in daylight hours that makes them shed out. It's possible to speed that up by using artificial light when the horse is stabled. Again that's what I tend to do when I need mine for the likes of film work in the Spring and I don't want to clip them. I'm thinking you're probably going "drat" reading that as I know you've just clipped her! Personally for ponies I prefer them unclipped always but they do need to be clean and well presented still. Here you wouldn't clip a native breed pony.

The first photo of yours shedded made me smile - I'm presuming its a computer thing but she looks dark purple on it. I presume she's not in real life though ;)
(PS Thomas, if you haven't pieced yet, I'm the guy you highly advised not to board out my few stalls that I planned on building on TMS..) Yep I'd realised. Have you seen sense yet ;)

When do you make the move?

Must confess though I thought you were a lady not a guy..... whoops! Got that wrong!

Her mane looked a little rough in the photo, cleaning it and conditioning it will make it look a little nicer, more smooth. JMHO.

I use a general livestock shampoo--can't think of the name right now. As I am at work can;t run out to the barn. It comes in a squarish gallon jar and is white when it is cold and turns to a liquid about 85 degrees.

Then for conditioner I use mane and tail. Put it in and leave it in for a good while, then rinse it out. The day of the show I will use Show sheen or some other product similar.

On my white grays, I will use the shampoos gray haired ladies use to make their hair more white gray. It has a bluing agent to sparkly up the white mane or tail.

If you wanted more shine, there are products to make the black and dark bays more sparkly.

She's cute! You could just leave her mane long, but weave or braid in some red and white ribbons to fancy her up for this special day. Perhaps a few ribbons in her tail, too.

VERY cute pony!

I have always used the people leave-in conditioner Infusium (32, I think?) after washing manes and tails.

It saves the last rinse out step and is an excellent product to leave the hair soft and tangle free.

I find the Show Sheen type products seem to cause breakage if used too often.

Oh, you can even use the Infusium on dry hair when just grooming too. I used to use it almost every day on a big bay TWH with an unbelieveable amount of mane and tail. It's great stuff and not slippery from silicone. I bought a spray bottle first, then refilled from a huge bottle from Wal-Mart. It was always cheaper than Show Sheen/Cowboy Magic.

She's not.. but her father is though. He's blackblackblack! Sometimes he looks purpose or blue!

This is him:

I did know that, my QH friends have their lights on all the time. Is it any certain spectrum of light??? Or just any bulb? How long does that usually take?

Again that's what I tend to do when I need mine for the likes of film work in the Spring and I don't want to clip them.
I work in the movies! :) I would love to use my horses and be on screen. I a mini collection on antique vehicles and would die to use them on film!

When do you make the move?
June 2nd is the possession date. We found out this morning that the well will probably be dry in July/August. So if the lady doesn't put in a new well, since the quality and quantity was guaranteed in offer, we can pull out of the deal, or do it ourselves with a mortgage holdback.

Must confess though I thought you were a lady not a guy..... whoops!
Depends on the day! hahaha!! oh... erm... yeah..

:( She was just washed and conditioned in that photo... maybe it just needs to be shorter? Like when you get a haircut to rid the dead ends? Lays nicer after.

Whole new can of worms. What do I wear?
I'll be in this cart

Every time I've shown it's been with my coach's horses with her barn colours. I've never had to co-ordinate for myself!

Since she is a Newfoundland Pony, I was thinking to make myself a Newfoundland Tartan vest to wear? I already have a tartan tie. Should I do both? Too much? Just the vest? Just the tie? Help!

Here's the tartan.

Definitely needs some conditioning, then I'd leave it loose or do a running braid. As for conditioner, go to Wal-mart or the drug store and get hot oil treatment. It does a great job on the frizzies and makes the hair look shiny. If you can't find that, there are all sorts of intensive conditioners for people's hair- just pick one. If you are going to do a running braid, don't forget to pick up some leave in conditioner or some hair spray for the day of.
