View Full Version : Update post 55 - RIP little one - Please jingle for our brand new filly....
rideagoldenpony
May. 1, 2009, 09:47 AM
Born this morning -- I missed the birth by an hour (I'm estimating).
Her lungs are full of amniotic fluid. We've been holding her upside down (pony baby) per the vet's instructions and she's lost a bunch of fluid that way. She sounds about half better -- she's still making an awful "horking" noise when she breathes, but it WAS a lot louder.
She is out of a STUNNING little imported mare -- and the foal is a palomino filly with tons of chrome -- EXACTLY what I wanted.
The vet is on her way, but not here yet. I'm not terribly hopeful, and feeling really sad.
Please jingle for our darling little girl.

Thank you so much everyone.
The vet just left.
It's worse than I thought.
We held her upside down and got a LOT of fluid out of her..... but she still is making a "horking" noise when she breathes. Her face is really dished -- more than what we are accustomed to. The noise seems to come from the front -- vet thinks that probably her airway is restricted -- possibly some kind of deformity. She thought that perhaps she had laid in the mare against the pelvis and had grown incorrectly.
I came >< this close to having her put her down, and then we decided to wait and at least see how she does through the day.
NOT in her favor is the fact that she is not trying to nurse. We milked the mare and she drank some, but she does not have a strong suck reflex, which is very unusual for our pony babies.
She's absolutely gorgeous. I'm pretty devastated.

Jingles For you!
Just so you know I had a horse with a facial deformity where half of his face for a lack of a better term is caved in. They believe it happened in utero. He is in his early 20's and still showing in the Hunters with one of my best friends.
Also- Our 09 foal that is on the ground had the same honking noise. He is perfectly fine now, our vet also does a lot of cattle and she said she sees that ofter in calfs. She said she actually grabs them by their hind feet when they are born and swings them around!!!!!
Hopefully your little one is improving !!!

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and kind words.
She is hanging in there. We are milking the mare and feeding her every hour or less. She only has the desire to suck for a little while when she first wakes up.
I called and chatted with Kathy (equine-reproduction.com) about her, to see if she had any ideas. Kathy suggested a way to get more milk in her, and posed the question about whether the sound she has been making is roaring.
After reading about it, and how she is right now, I'm thinking that is probably not it.
Actually, I think her breathing seems somewhat improved. Still a bit labored, still "wheezy", but not the honking sound she was making earlier.
We were able to get a little more milk into her with the 1 pm feeding than we have been. She has ZERO desire to look for milk from her dam -- in fact from the time I found her in the stall (at approx 1 hr old +/-) she has not looked for milk, except to suck her tongue when she first wakes up from a nap.
I have to say, it is really a roller coaster of thinking she's doing a little better -- then not. And she's about the most darling little thing you can possibly imagine with enchanting yellow eyelashes, tiny tippy yellow ears and a tiny pink nose. It's hard not to fall in love. I of course am realistic and know that this likely has a negative prognosis, but for now we are following everything the vet recommended and doing the best we can....
We'll see what happens.
monami
May. 1, 2009, 04:38 PM
Do you think she is possibly a bit dysmature and/or hypoxic? The tongue sucking is sometimes seen in dummy foals. Do you have a hospital you can take her to?

Unfortunately a hospital setting is not an option here, unless things are quite bad. It's a long drive. Her dam came to us extremely, extremely wild, and while she has really improved since she has been here, it would be difficult to deal with her in a hospital setting, I suspect.
The tongue sucking she is doing does not seem to be anything other than what foals typically do when they would really LIKE to nurse, but haven't attached themselves to a spigot yet.
I'm certainly not discounting that she could be a dummy foal -- that is looking like a strong possibility at this point. She doesn't seem dysmature (and was born at 339 days), but obviously things are far from ideal!
Any and all ideas are most certainly welcome.

Jingles from Florida. I know what you mean about a roller coaster, but it sounds like she is making some improvements...lets hope it continues. Did the vet tube her with colostrum? Is there an equine hospital close by? Thinking of you and the precious filly.

Again, thank you everyone. I sure appreciate all of your good thoughts.
My husband and I think she has an obstruction in her throat.... that's just a guess of course, but it sure seems like it. The honking noise is gone. She is now just wheezy, which seems like an improvement. Did I say that already? I apologize if I did. I'm feeling a little rummy and somewhat braindead at the moment.
I just called the vet to come back out. I want her tubed with colostrum, and I sure wish she had done that when she was here this morning. She is getting *some*, but I feel like it isn't an adequate amount.

We just euthanized her.
There was nothing left to do. The vet will do a necropsy. Thinks that it was a problem with the "flap" that controls where the air/food goes. Can't remember the name.
It's a pretty sad evening around here.

Gretchen, I just found this thread and I am so sorry. I had a boarder's filly March 6th that was almost the same way. However she could not stand on her own, though she tried and she died at about 5 hours on her own. Swallowed a lot of amniotic fluid. Was a red bag, but the bag broke and I was there and helped get her out. Did the honking/breathing noise and then it went away but she kept getting weaker. No will to nurse. Hugs to you, it's hard stuff breeding isn't it? This was my first foal of the year and luckily I have a break til end of this month when I start with 7 due. I am excited but with bated breath. Sometimes it hurts so much. And Sugarpony you are right, everytime I have a healthy one I thank God for amazing miracles. Same thing with human babies, everyone is a blessing.

Thank you all SO MUCH for your kind words.
This loss hit me pretty hard -- I just wanted to make it OK so bad.... there was just nothing to do.
The vet called me last night and said that her trachea was crushed down near the base of her neck. She said she couldn't find any indication of an injury, but thought that perhaps she had laid wrong in the mare, or possibly a birth injury -- but again, she said she would have thought there would have been some bruising if that was the case, and there was none. She said that each breath was the equivilant of trying to suck a too thick milkshake through a straw -- ie her trachea would collapse every time she tried to draw in air. There simply was nothing to do for her.
Again, thank you all for your kind words. I appreciate it SO MUCH.
The mare is doing well. She got turned back out with her friends today and was bucking and leaping across the pasture. The only plus in all of this is that we now have a nice stash of frozen colostrum, and I did discover that cutting off the tip end of a big dosage syringe and reversing the plunger works a treat to quickly and easily milk a mare.
