I am very bummed.
My new-to-me little medicine hat mare whom was 8 weeks from due date... who I've been suspect of for a month or so, is in flaming, squatting, horrible whorey heat. And she tends to *silent* heat.
I also had the briefest flash of hope for the Big Bay Broodmare Extraordinaire(TM) who came up with a uterus full of cysts at ultrasound--but SHE looks due in 8 weeks... I read the current thread on cysts and realized it was possible we didn't SEE the embryo... but no, she too came into big ol' heat.
This will be my third year without a foal, third year as well without a sale horse. I have some hard decisions to make.
The paint mare is especially crushing because it's a long, complicated circle of life story with her... It started 8 years ago, when I lost *my* medicine hat colt to Quest... and because of her I met a wonderful friend and amazing mentor for my job... we lost her daughter--my filly, but still at her breeders... It's long and complicated, but more emotional than most.
I was just, just gearing up for things. Just starting to get in the mindset. I am really sad today.

So sorry and how very disappointing. That is tough to take emotionally and financially. Breeding isn't for the faint of heart or pocketbook for sure.
Translation: That sucks! :( And you're the milk testing guru who I learned it all from and you can't even use your skills! :)

Oh, that IS a bummer! You say third year without a foal. Have you been trying each of the three years, with no success? If so, then I suppose the decision you have to make is whether to try again?
Ugh. I'd be so determined to get a foal out of the situation, but I understand that the checkbook might be pretty worn out by now.

I'm very sorry for your luck. Last year my mare checked open in the spring after being confired by US at 17, 30 and 60 days. She had a normal winter and took on one cycle the next try. Keep your chin up!

I am so very sorry. Those of us who are breeders know all too well the ups and down of breeding. You are welcome to come and visit Opie our orphan colt and give him big hugs and cry on his (crooked) shoulders.

thanks. I know you guys get it.
I am wrong-- I did have a lovely filly 2 years ago, she was a custom though, two years from the contract the one that I just hemorrhaged money on... but that was a wonderful blessing when I GOT the contract, so it goes around and comes around.
In '07 I did not breed--lost the mare I booked Saphiro for.
I am VERY lucky--spent a minimum last year, only tried the one cycle for each mare, timed it impeccably... but then wrecked my knee and the year was over. So it could be much worse. MUCH worse.
I know this is better than dystocia, or neonatal complications... I may be changing jobs soon, so this could be a blessing in disguise.
thanks for getting it though.

Not to fan false hope here...but we've also had threads here regarding big flaming heats in pregnant mares (etc.) My most experienced (8th foal this year) didn't follow her "tried & true pattern" this year...and I think a lot of folks have been having a "different" year. I'd sure hate to have you blink your eyes and miss a foaling....
That said, ((HUG))! Prayers & Jingles

No one likes that life has its ups and downs. You just seem to have gotten yours all in one dose. Or maybe a bunch consecutively. Those conversations you have with yourself afterwards are always the hardest. Could I have done something different? Should I keep going on? Or just give up and cut my losses? Can I survive if I keep going?
Our thoughts are with you. Hugs.

I'm sorry too:cry: You sound like you are in what we (a couple of my friends and I) call the s*#% cycle, seems like bad stuff comes in a wave. Having lost a mare just makes it that much worse. But - three bad years means you should have three GREAT years coming up! And in a down economy, you won't have tough-to-sell babies this year, and when the economy starts its upswing in 2010, you WILL have some lovely babies, I'm sure of it  Here is to three GREAT YEARS, starting right NOW!
